About Qing

Hello! I'm a native Mandarin Chinese speaker with over 6,000 hours of teaching experience. I'm CTCSOL-certified and have taught learners of different ages, backgrounds and goals, both online and in person.

I hold an MSc in International Education from the University of St Andrews. My background in architecture and my experience founding a Mandarin club in Jakarta have deepened my interest in language, culture and how people connect across communities.

I've taught children, university students, working professionals and older adults, from complete beginners to advanced learners, in both one-to-one and group lessons. I enjoy getting to know each student and making learning meaningful, practical and enjoyable.

Chinese characters are a particular interest of mine. Having studied Japanese for many years, I've gained insight into how characters connect meaning and vocabulary across languages. Calligraphy, a family tradition and personal interest, has also shaped my relationship with Chinese characters.

As a language learner myself, I understand that learning a new language takes time, patience and encouragement. I've also studied German and Indonesian, and I'm currently learning Koine Greek. These experiences continue to inform my approach to teaching.

I believe learning Mandarin is about more than memorising words and grammar. It's about expressing yourself with confidence, understanding how the language works and discovering the culture behind it.

Outside teaching, I enjoy cooking for friends and exploring the joys of growing my own vegetables.

Whether you'd like to use Mandarin in everyday life, at work, for study or travel, or simply out of curiosity, I'd love to help you find your own way of learning.

Every learner has different goals, strengths and challenges. I tailor my lessons to your current level and learning preferences, combining structured learning with practical communication to help you build confidence and make steady progress.

1. Chinese Characters – Understand the System, Build Confidence

Chinese characters are both a window into Chinese culture and an important foundation for long-term progress in Mandarin. Rather than memorising characters in isolation, we'll explore their structures, recurring components and patterns, connecting them with pronunciation, meaning and vocabulary. Through guided practice, you'll develop your character recognition, reading and writing skills and gain a deeper understanding of how the writing system works.

2. Communicative Teaching – Learn Mandarin for Real Life

Learning a language means being able to use it. Through conversations, practical activities and real-life situations, we'll develop your speaking and listening skills while learning useful vocabulary and grammar in context. Whether your goals involve everyday life, work, travel or study, we'll focus on meaningful tasks that help you express yourself with confidence, connect with others and navigate a new cultural environment.

3. Curriculum-Informed Teaching – Structured Learning and Exam Preparation

I use clear learning objectives and draw on my ongoing interest in Chinese language curricula and assessment to support your progress. Whether you're studying for HSK or YCT, exploring GCSE or IB Mandarin, or looking for a structured learning pathway, we'll set goals suited to your level and needs. I'll help you connect curriculum requirements with practical language use, preparing for assessments while developing your Mandarin more broadly.

4. Small-Group Mandarin Lessons – Learn Together

Would you like to learn Mandarin with others? I'm open to organising small-group lessons for 2–3 learners with similar levels, goals and availability. Contact me through Superprof to share your interests and preferred times. If there's a suitable match, we can discuss the schedule, learning plan and fees.

How We'll Learn Together

Drawing on my experience with learners from diverse backgrounds, I'll help you identify your learning needs, set realistic goals and develop a personalised learning plan. We'll review your progress and adapt our approach as needed, helping you become a more confident and independent learner.
