  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Spanish fluently because of my origins. Growing up in Madrid, Spain, I was immersed in the language from a young age, speaking it daily with family, friends, and in school. However, my passion for language also grew through formal education, where I studied Spanish literature, linguistics and Philosophy. This academic foundation helped me appreciate the beauty of the language and develop the skills to teach it.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language’s culture?

An emblematic figure of Spanish culture is Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. Cervantes not only shaped the Spanish language but also created a character who embodies the spirit of adventure, idealism, and complexity that can be found within the culture. His influence is so significant that Spanish is often referred to as “la lengua de Cervantes” (the language of Cervantes)
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite expressions in Spanish is “sobremesa”, which refers to the time spent sitting and chatting after a meal. It reflects the importance of family, conversation, and shared moments in Spanish culture. It’s a beautiful tradition where the meal is not just about food but also about connection and quality time. I had the opportunity to experience it both at home and with my closest friends.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Spanish matters to me because it connects me to my roots, my culture, and my heritage. It’s a way to pass on the traditions, stories, and values of my family and my country to others. Moreover, as a teacher, it allows me to help others bridge cultures and communicate in a language spoken by millions worldwide.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

For many learners, one of the main difficulties in learning Spanish is mastering the subjunctive mood, which is not always intuitive for learners. It’s used frequently in everyday conversations to express doubt, desire, or uncertainty, which can be tricky for non-native
speakers. The best way to overcome this is consistent practice through conversation and contextual examples, as well as gradually exposing oneself to native content like music, films, and books.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During my university years in Murcia, Spain, where I studied Pure Philosophy, I had the opportunity to attend masterful lectures from professors specializing in Philosophy. I was captivated by how they enunciated and spoke with such clarity about topics they knew deeply. That experience not only deepened my love for the language but also taught me how to simplify complex concepts for students—a skill that has been invaluable in my teaching career.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

A transformative trip for me was my pilgrimage along El Camino de Santiago, which left a profound mark on me. The journey not only allowed me to experience various dialects and regional expressions but also revealed the deep cultural and historical connections tied to the language. Walking alongside people from different Spanish-speaking countries enriched my understanding of how the language evolves across different contexts. Additionally, acting as an interpreter for international pilgrims and helping those with little to no Spanish was an unforgettable and meaningful experience.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me a Superprof is my passion for making language learning an engaging, personalized experience. With over 30 years of teaching experience, I tailor each lesson to my student’s needs, whether they are beginners or advanced learners. My deep knowledge of authentic Castilian Spanish and the cultural nuances of the language help my students not only learn the mechanics but also feel the rhythm and soul of Spanish.
