About Charlotte

In addition to my ambition to become a solo and orchestral violinist I also have a very strong interest in teaching and I have been a private violin, viola and piano teacher since 2011 with pupils gaining distinctions through the ABRSM graded system. In 2015 I moved to London to begin my Masters degree studies at the Royal Academy of Music and also began teaching for the Hertfordshire Music Service. I taught children aged 5-18 from beginner to post-grade 8. I also took the beginner and junior string classes at St Albans Music School as well as helping at the junior and senior string orchestras at Potters Bar Music Centre on a Saturday morning. I have always enjoyed outreach work and prior to this in 2014 I gained a place on the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra professional experience scheme. As well as performing with the orchestra part of this involved volunteering at a school supported by the RLPO 'In Harmony' Scheme where I aided the string teachers during individual lessons, musicianship classes and orchestra rehearsals. In 2013 I participated in the RNCM Young Strings Placement (one year), which involved teaching individual and group lessons, watching other teachers give lessons, helping/taking the musicianship and Dalcroze classes and directing ensembles. I have peripatetic and wider opportunities teaching and shadowing experience (Millfields First School), which has included running music workshops, aiding violin lessons and helping at school performances. I was also a String Tutor at Bromsgrove Area Music Centre coaching the young violins and helping at events such as their annual performances at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

'An accomplished, energetic performance with a big heart' - Tchaikovsky violin concerto with Sinfonia of Birmingham, conductor Michael Seal - Birmingham Post 2015

Charlotte began learning the violin with Mary Howles and later Michael Seal. Playing in orchestras from a young age, Charlotte developed her orchestral training in the Academy Chamber Orchestra with Peter Bridle MBE. In 2008, she gained a place at Chethams School of Music in Manchester where she studied violin with Eyal Kless and Benedict Holland. In her final year Charlotte, along with her quartet, made their Wigmore Hall debut. They also performed and were broadcast live on BBC radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ programme. She was awarded the school's Mozart Scholarship for outstanding chamber music work as well as winning their Dewhurst and Torevell prize. In 2010, Charlotte was appointed as leader of the CBSO Youth Orchestra; a position she held until 2015. With them she worked under conductors such as: Andrew Litton, Andris Nelsons, Edward Gardner, John Wilson, Ben Gernon and Jac Van Steen; as well as soloists: Leon McCawley, Chloe Hanslip and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.
After being presented as 2014 winner of the Norman George Scholarship, Charlotte graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in 2015 after studying with Alexander Sitkovetsky. During her time at RNCM, Charlotte performed as a principal member of all of the college’s orchestras including co-leading the RNCM Symphony Orchestra in their performances in the Bridgewater Hall. She also appeared as guest leader of many northern-based orchestras including; the Chester Philharmonic and Lancashire Chamber Orchestras (with conductor Richard Howarth, ex-Leader Manchester Camerata) and the Manchester Festival Orchestra. In her fourth year at the RNCM Charlotte successfully auditioned for a place on the professional experience scheme with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Her passion for chamber music led Charlotte to establish the Virr String Quartet who were winners of the 2014 RNCM Nossek Romantic String Quartet Prize and finalists in the RNCM Schubert and Hirsch Prizes. Over their three years of performing together they gave recitals in Manchester, Birmingham and London and performed in the prestigious RNCM Chamber Music Festival on three separate occasions. The quartet also performed in masterclasses with Frans Helmerson and a public workshop with the late Peter Maxwell-Davies performing his Naxos Quartet No.3. They received regular coaching from world renowned musicians such as Petr Prause, Levon Chilingirian and the Sitkovetsky Piano Trio.
In September 2015, Charlotte began her Masters Degree studies at the Royal Academy of Music with professors Mateja Marinkovic and Jack Liebeck. In October 2015 she led the Royal Academy Sinfonia in their four performances of Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro in the Hackney Empire Theatre with Jane Glover and Janet Suzmann. Following this she worked with the London Sinfonietta in their ‘side-by-side’ project performing region 3 of Stockhausen's Hymnen which was broadcast on BBC radio 3. Charlotte also performed in the BBC Get Playing Virtual Orchestra recording of Bizet’s Carmen with Marin Alsop as part of the BBC’s Get Playing scheme.
In partnership with St. John's Church, Bromsgrove, Charlotte played an active role in establishing the Orchestra of St. John (OSJ) in 2011. As the leader of OSJ, Charlotte and conductor Richard Jenkinson have worked with soloists such as: Mark Bebbington, Ben Frith, David Le Page, Paul Barritt and Louise Williams. She herself has also appeared as soloist including performances of Vivaldi Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky, Mozart A Major (No.5) and Sibelius violin concertos. The orchestra was awarded ‘Most Promising Newcomer Organisation’ in the 2014 Spirit of Bromsgrove Awards with concerts receiving 4 star reviews by the Birmingham Post. In 2016, Charlotte was invited to lead the Sinfonia of Birmingham, with conductor Michael Seal, in their summer concert. She was subsequently invited to lead their next concert which featured Beethoven violin concerto with violinist Thomas Gould.
As a soloist, Charlotte’s recent concerto performances have included: Vivaldi Four Seasons with the Sinfonia of Birmingham and Orchestra da Camera; Mendelssohn violin concerto with the Walsall Symphony Orchestra, Sale Chamber Orchestra and Coventry Youth Orchestra; Bruch violin concerto in G minor with the Telford Orchestra and Eroica Camerata; Elgar violin concerto with the Halesowen Orchestra; Tchaikovsky violin concerto with the Westmorland Symphony Orchestra, Redditch Orchestra and Orchestra of St. John; as well as Sibelius violin concerto with the Open University Orchestra and Orchestra of St. John; and Mozart violin concerto in A major also with the Orchestra of St.John. Charlotte has worked regularly as a duo with pianists Michael Pandya and Jacky Wong. With them she has received coaching with Michael Dussek and Ian Brown at the Royal Academy and they have a forward programme of recitals through to 2018 including performances at: Worcester Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, St Bride's Church London; as well as lunchtime concerts at the Royal Academy.
In July 2017 Charlotte graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with Distinction. She was also awarded the prestigious Diploma of the Royal Academy for an outstanding final recital. Charlotte plays on an 1884 Joseph Hel violin. She is kindly supported by the David Morgan Music Trust, the Helen Mackaness Foundation and the Elmley Foundation.
