About Pedro

I am a Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStructE) with over 18 years of professional experience, including a PhD in structural engineering. I currently serve as an Associate Director at a leading UK consultancy, where I have led signature projects across London, including high-end residential developments, academic and cultural buildings.

I have a strong track record in structural analysis, steel and concrete design, finite element modelling, and strength of materials, and I successfully passed the IStructE Chartered Membership exam on my first attempt. I have also published five peer-reviewed papers in the field of light-gauge steel behaviour and design, during my postgraduate studies.

Since 2022, I have been tutoring students online, helping them understand core structural engineering principles, develop exam-ready skills, and gain confidence in tackling complex problems. My teaching is practical, exam-focused, and tailored to the individual needs of each student.

Subjects & Focus Areas:
- IStructE Chartered Membership exam preparation
- Structural Analysis & Strength of Materials
- Steel, Concrete, Timber and Masonry Design

My lessons are tailored to your individual goals. I offer a free initial conversation to discuss your objectives and determine the most suitable lesson format and content. Drawing on my professional and academic background, I provide a strong balance between theoretical knowledge and practical, industry-based experience.

These sessions are ideal for apprentices, undergraduates, and postgraduates in civil or structural engineering, as well as professionals seeking to deepen their expertise or solve specific technical challenges. *Please note that I do not complete project work or assignments on behalf of students. My role is to provide guidance, support, and teaching to help you develop your own skills and understanding.*

As a Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStructE), I also support candidates preparing for the IStructE exam. This includes sharing exam strategies, reviewing past papers, marking answers, and guiding you through your preparation.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in civil engineering and particularly structural engineering probably goes back to my childhood playing with Legos. I was particularly fascinated with maths and physics later on and I really enjoy the problem-solving nature of my job as a structural engineer. In the meantime, I figured that I really enjoy mentoring and teaching and I eventually found Superprof in 2022 and have been going strong since then as a part-time private tutor for all things structural!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My main area of interest and expertise is the analysis, behaviour, and design of buildings and other structures. I feel comfortable teaching in statics, basic mechanics, solid mechanics, structural analysis and design, and structural materials (concrete, steel, timber, and masonry). I can also share some knowledge on seismic design and I think I add real value by sharing my professional experience alongside the theory and problem-solving. I also enjoy helping people prepare for the IStructE Chatership Exam.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I am the first civil engineer in the family! I would say that a few teachers at TU Lisbon definitely made an impact, but overall I was attracted to structural engineering because it was challenging - the problems are wide and varied and it is really hard to be bored when there are so many things to consider in this profession.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is someone who is sufficiently knowledgeable on the subject matter, but who can also read the student's requirements and knowledge level and adapt the lesson as required and "on the go". In this particular field, knowledge build-up from basics and first principles is extremely important and I find it extremely important to identify if the student will need to go over a separate subject, if that means it will increase their success later down the line. I also believe a tutor in this field should be someone who can discuss both the theory and the application - construction is an amazing industry but the details can be really tricky if you don't appreciate the bigger picture.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There are a few anecdotes relating to the 'dynamic' relationship between structural engineers and architects.
My favourite one would be reminding them that, like death and taxes, gravity is something you can't run away from.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Structural engineering is an incredible field that challenges you everyday. Each project is different, with its own set of constraints, targets, and challenges. The industry is currently seeing a big push towards sustainability and reduction of embodied carbon, which is bringing back traditional materials like timber and masonry back into the spotlight, as well as other unusual alternatives such as rammed earth, bamboo, and hemp. This in itself is a challenge as oftentimes there are no real 'guidelines' for design and you have to make use of your understanding of first principles, and material theory and set out to experiment!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I would say that both my profession and teaching/mentoring are extremely fulfilling. My passion however is likely more related to food and travelling!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I would like to think that my students will recognise that I really care about their success. I have been a student once and I know how tough it can be to juggle multiple courses, exams, and coursework.
I didn't feel particularly supported when I started my career and I generally feel that it is my mission to facilitate knowledge sharing and help people with an interest in this field to be successful.
