About Katie
A little about me! After graduating from Birmingham Conservatoire with a Masters in performance, I have been teaching and playing music in the Birmingham area and beyond. I am also an active musician in the folk scene playing with Bonfire Radicals, The Destroyers, Filkins Ensemble, Sonia Sabri Company and as a freelance recording artist. Aside from my work as an instrumental teacher and performer, I am a music leader on community music projects; helping vulnerable young people and adults in creative music making.

I'd like to help people find their own musical path through music that they enjoy playing! Music should be something pleasurable in all of our lives and for our instrument not to be something that we look at and feel pressure or guilt because of. I offer lessons in clarinet styles such as Balkan, klezmer, Scandi and I offer Irish flute and whistle lessons. I also have experience of teaching clarinet from beginner to grade 8 and up to grade 5 in flute with the ABRSM (Royal Schools of Music exam board). My biggest passion is listening to and playing traditional folk music and central to much of this music is social music making so I would like to help facilitate that for you if that is something you are interested in. That could be ear training, learning traditional tunes ‘on the fly’, basic improvising so that playing off the page is not scary, or learning to read to play in ensembles or bands. Any or all of the above! What does a first lesson with me look like? A first lesson with me will involve a chat so that we can get to know one another. I’d like to find out what it is you’d like to get out of our sessions, what has motivated you to take lessons and what kind of music you really love to listen to. If you’re a beginner we might put the instrument together and learn to make our first sounds. If you’ve been playing a while you might like to play me something so that I can get a feel for where you are at and make suggestions for what I’d recommend we work on. Before we finish we might like to work out a kind of structure for our ongoing lessons i.e.: we could spend the first 10 minutes of a lesson learning notation, music theory concepts or looking at some new techniques or ornaments, the next 10 minutes might involve some ear training and listening skills and the last 10 could might be a chance to mute yourself and play along with me! I’m open to suggestions but am also happy to lead the way if you’d like me to at this stage.

I couldn’t recommend Katie Stevens more highly as a teacher. Her knowledge and abilities span a range that is seldom seen in musicians, and her understanding and mastery of the skills needed in both classical and traditional musical styles would make her invaluable to anyone trying to span that gap. Furthermore, her patience and commitment to my learning have been unparalleled and helped me achieve things I hadn’t thought possible!
Katie is an exceptional music teacher, and we throughly enjoyed learning from her. Her passion for music and dedication to her students are truly evident. Thank you for inspiring the love of music in all of us. I am confident that your passion and expertise have affected us in a very positive way.
You have awakened the lovely sound of the flute and clarinet within us-it's the sound of Katie!Katie is an incredible musician with a deep passion for music that is infectious.
Learning with Katie will teach you far more than just the notes, but also a wider love for music and how to find your own musical voice.
Her patient and supportive teaching style is enhance by her enthusiasm and pure love for music of all styles.
Katie is always pushing herself to be curious with new musical styles, which means she is able to empathise with how it feels to be a student learning something new and use this to enhance her own teaching. As a student of Katie's, I have found this to be huge benefit as not only does she have a huge breath of knowledge but she is also open to exploring new musical avenues and follow whatever direction I may like to take!View more recommendations
