About Nicola
I started playing clarinet in senior school, however this was short-lived due to a change of school. It was not until I was in my mid 20's that I got the opportunity to purchase my own clarinet and I began my musical journey properly. When I got to 30, life changed, the clarinet took a back seat for a number of years. They say life begins in your 40's and it truly does! At the age of 44 I bought myself a Sax, got myself an amazing tutor and joined an Amateur Jazz Band. I passed my Grade 8 Classical Clarinet Exam in Dec 2023 and am now working towards a Diploma. I am also Grade 7 Jazz Sax, passed Dec 2024 and Grade 2 Flute . As well as working on my exams, I play Saxophone & Clarinet with the John Seeley Jazz Band, Clarinet in the Essex Yeomanry Military Band and also the Maldon Orchestra. I perform regularly in concerts with all of these bands and as well as this I perform at some local open mic nights when I find the time. I also run a Beginner Jazz and Blues Band for my aspiring beginner students. My motto is - Age is a Number, so Live in the Now I'm a big advocate of continued personal development, so I still attend lessons with my own tutor, I attend lots of courses in Classical ,Jazz, and Symphonic Wind Band play weekends where the attendance criteria is set at a high level of playing experience.

Everyone is different and people learn at different speeds, what works for one student may not work for another; so I don't have a regimented teaching method because one size does not fit all. I base each student as an individual and offer flexible learning as it's not all about grades, some people simply just prefer to learn without the pressure of exams. Learning an instrument should be fun and I prefer to take things at the pace of the student rather than rush through things. I try to separate the different elements of learning music so my students are not trying to put themselves under the pressure of learning it all at the same time and feeling overwhelmed by it all. I also hold an advanced DBS check which is registered on the update service and am a member of the ISM. I try to keep things real and down to earth so rather than choosing a video of me performing something real flashy, I thought it would be nice to pop on a tune from the Beginner Saxophone Book I'm teaching from to show you what you could also achieve after a few months of lessons.
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Nicola.
Perfect! Thoroughly enjoyed my lesson. Nicola was inspirational. She was encouraging and banished any insecurities I may have had about going back to playing an instrument in my sixties.
I learnt a lot, she gave me lots of tips on how to improve and how to move forward. I am really looking forward to my next lesson.- Thoroughly enjoyed our 1st lesson, Claire has a clarinet background which she played quite some time ago so we spent time refreshing her memory with music reading and explaining how the techniques on the Sax differ to the clarinet. Looking forward to her next lessonNicola's response :

I first held a saxophone last April and have worked with Nicola for almost a year now. She has been a very patient tutor but also drives me to be a better player. Lessons include practical and technical exercises and we work on all different music genres. I feel my playing has really developed under Nicola’ s guidance
If you’re looking for a saxophone teacher who’s talented but also makes every lesson feel like a hangout with a friend, Nicola is the one. She knows how to break down things in a way that actually makes sense, helping me learn theory alongside practical, assisting in becoming a rounded musician.
Her patience is next level—she’s happy to go over the same thing a million times if it’s not clicking trying different ways until is sticks, but she also knows exactly when to push you out of your comfort zone. Nicola’s enthusiasm for music is contagious, and she makes you want to practice (even when it’s a real struggle to find the time!).
On top of all that, her lessons are super fun! She’s got a great sense of humor, is full of creative tips, and genuinely cares about your progress. Whether you’re a total beginner or someone looking to take your playing to the next level, you couldn’t ask for a better teacher.I have know Nicola for a number of years. I have found Nicola to be a patient, helpful, woman who will go that extra mile.
Nikki is a great tutor due to being patient and understanding the frustrations beginner's have when starting out on the clarinet.
Lessons are tailored to me and music is achievable and funView more recommendations
