About Bruce

I am currently a second year music undergraduate at Magdalene College, Cambridge, having turned down scholarships and offers from the Royal College of Music and Royal Northern College of Music in 2019.

I completed my A-levels at Wells Cathedral School as a specialist pianist studying with John Byrne (Royal College of Music). During my sixth form years, I have led several music study/revision groups for my peers, covering topics from history and analysis to harmony and counterpoint, with unanimously positive feedback and improvement of exam results. In Year 13 I was appointed the academic music prefect, and consequently oversaw the weekly theory workshops alongside the Graduate Music Assistants.

Before coming to the UK, I had the honour of translating for Professor Joseph Banowetz (University of North Texas, USA), as part of a series of piano masterclasses held at the Chinese Conservatoire in Beijing, in the summer of 2017. This led to an immediate employment as the translator for Ivan Yanakov's masterclasses a week later, and subsequently some private piano teaching, before my studies began in September.

About the lesson

I am generally able to help with: general essay writing, academic music up to A-level standards (or equivalent), ABRSM theory up to Grade 6 Distinction, and classical piano performance up to ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction standard. I am also able to offer advice in these more specific areas: fugal writing in the baroque style, Bach Chorale, 16th century counterpoint.

I would start by getting to know my student prior to an official meeting: their areas of interest, their musical experience, their strengths and weaknesses, and how they would like me to help them. I would then decide whether I am the best person to help them, and if so, adapt my teaching method accordingly to best suit their needs.

Given the current restrictions, I am only able to teach online via Zoom. I would require at least 24hrs of notice in case of cancellations. Any written work that wish to be examined needs to be submitted before 5pm on the previous day. For piano teaching, students can send in video recordings beforehand, if they prefer, due to internet issues.

I am a firm believer of the importance of academic independence. My goal as a teacher is to equip my students with the necessary knowledge and skills so that they would eventually be able to find out the answers themselves.

Details

At least 24hrs of notice is required for any cancellations. As I am teaching mainly out of pleasure, rate could be subject to negotiation, depending on individual circumstances.
