About Dr Tong
I am a Computational Social Scientist, Higher Education educator, researcher and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner with over 20 years of experience in Higher Education.
My professional interests span technology, data, Artificial Intelligence, research and cloud computing, giving me an interdisciplinary perspective on how digital technologies are used in real-world academic, professional and organisational environments.
I am also an experienced researcher and author, having published 10 books and more than 50 academic and professional articles. My academic background has developed my ability to take complex concepts, examine them critically and communicate them clearly to learners with different levels of experience.
As an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, I have a strong foundation in AWS cloud concepts, services, security, architecture, pricing and support. I particularly enjoy helping people who are new to cloud computing understand what can initially seem like a large and complicated subject.
My teaching style is patient, structured and practical. I recognise that many people approaching cloud computing for the first time may not come from a traditional IT or computer science background. I therefore avoid unnecessary jargon and explain technical concepts in accessible language, while gradually introducing the terminology you need to become confident in the field.
My wider background in data, AI and computational social science also enables me to place cloud computing within a broader context. Rather than viewing cloud technologies simply as a collection of services, I encourage learners to understand why organisations use them and how cloud computing supports modern data, AI and digital applications.
Whether you are completely new to cloud computing, exploring AWS for your studies or professional development, considering a move into technology, or preparing for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, I will tailor lessons to your starting point and learning goals.

As your knowledge develops, we can explore how different AWS services fit together and how organisations use cloud technologies to solve practical problems.
AWS Cloud Practitioner preparation
If your goal is the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, lessons can be structured around the knowledge and concepts required at foundational level.
We can identify areas where you need additional support, work through key AWS concepts and use practice questions to develop your understanding and confidence.
My aim is not simply to help you prepare for an examination, but to ensure that you develop a useful understanding of cloud computing and AWS that extends beyond the certification itself.
Typical lesson length
Most lessons are 1–2 hours, depending on your goals and level of experience.
You can book an individual lesson to understand a particular topic or arrange a structured programme of sessions covering cloud fundamentals and AWS progressively.
Complete beginners are welcome. You do not need previous AWS, cloud computing or programming experience to start.
