About John
I fondly remember my own early years of musical education and all the teachers who championed, encouraged and pushed me to be the best pianist I could be. As a piano teacher now, I take extremely seriously the responsibility I have to instil a love of music in my students and motivate them to be the best they can be. I work with each of my students to find inspiring goals and I go above and beyond to help each student reach them. Regarding my own experience and training, I began the piano when I was 6, and started performing soon after as a soloist and as part of various groups. After completing both my Grade 8 and DipABRSM in music performance, I went on to study music at the University of York. Here I was able to tailor my degree to focus on performance and composition, while also receiving an excellent, well-rounded musical education. It was also here that I began to teach the piano. After graduating with a First Class Honours and receiving a scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music, I went on to complete a Masters' in Music Performance. Here I was pushed further in the technical aspects of piano performance and was able to dedicate the best part of two years to mastering this beautiful instrument. I also took a year-long module on instrumental teaching, which greatly aided my growing teaching practice. Since graduating, I have continued working as a piano teacher, accompanist, and performer. I have found that all three of these practices aid each other, solidifying my overall abilities as a pianist.

As a piano teacher I prioritise enabling students to become independent and well-rounded musicians. As part of my Masters' in Music Performance I conducted a practical research project on 1-1 teaching, which greatly shaped the way I approach teaching now. Early on, I ensure that all of my students are confident readers of music, whether that is traditional classical notation or chord-sheets. This enables students to find and learn music that they love very quickly, and gives them a sense of achievement and motivation. Almost without exception, I find that students who learn to read music progress significantly further and faster than those who don't. If students wish to take exams, then I gladly help them prepare thoroughly so that they can enter confidently. To date almost 90% of my students have received distinction or merit in Grades 1-8. However, if students do not wish to take exams, then I will never pressure them into it and allow them to simply enjoy playing for playing's sake! I teach the piano to anyone age 5+, beginners all the way to advanced students. For beginners I tend to recommend 30 min lessons to start with. After that I offer 45 and 60 min lessons to more experienced students.
