About Carrie
With degrees in viola performance from Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelor of Music), Manhattan School of Music (Master's), and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (Doctorate), I've spent a good amount of time thinking about and performing music! I've taught violin, viola, and chamber music at community music schools around the city, in residencies at universities around the country, and maintained my own private teaching studio since 2011. I also frequently perform in string quartets and contemporary music ensembles, and compose music for my own string quartet. All of these years of experience contribute to my approach to teaching, which focuses on unlocking the student's creativity and finding the music that motivates them to excellence.

I like to work with students to help them achieve their musical goals, whether that means classical music, pop tunes, fiddle, polishing up orchestra music for school, or something entirely different! Learning the basics of instrumental technique sets everyone up for success, but I find that working towards each student's interests motivates them to learn more quickly and have more fun. For beginners, I often start with the Suzuki and Shirley Givens books (depending on how young), and supplement with other tunes that interest the student. For intermediate and advanced students, we select repertoire based on level and goals.
