About Phillip

As a teacher, I am committed to a holistic outlook of education, one which seeks to not only provide an outstanding educational experience but also one which fosters confident, ambitious pupils. I hold a belief in treating students as individuals whose own interests and passions should be nurtured from an early age.

I currently work as a Year 6 teacher and Computing Subject Leader at a local preparatory school. Through this position, I have gained experience at tutoring for 11+ exams. Due to my position as a teacher int he final year of primary education, I have a deep and well-rounded knowledge of the primary curriculum in its entirety.

Previous to this position, I worked as Head of Key Stage 2 at a local state primary school where I was also a Year 4 Class Teacher. I was responsible for the coordination and management of four classes and line management of associated staff. To help me fulfil this role I was chosen as 1 of 6 candidates from applications across a federation to undertake a specialised training course for identified ‘future leaders’. In this role I regularly conducted observations and book scrutinies to ensure that teaching was of a high quality and provided support to teachers with their practice.

In my short time at this school, I implemented changes to the teaching of both maths and literacy to ensure that pupils’ individual learning needs were met and laid down expectations of teaching practice for future year groups.

I previously worked as a Year 6 Class Teacher for two years at a large, federated school in North London rated as outstanding by Ofsted. Here, I worked as part of a team with two assistant head teachers to lead Year 6 pupils to achieve excellent results in KS2 SATs, with high proportions of learners achieving expected standards in mathematics (93%), writing (89%) and reading (76%) in 2017. As Science Curriculum Leader, I took on the responsibility of ensuring science teaching throughout the school met the requirements of the newly-updated National Curriculum and have co-delivered staff training sessions to fulfil this role. I facilitated this through undertaking independent research and by liaising with contacts from my previous career as an educator in museums and galleries. I have also supported other teachers to develop hands-on, investigative science lessons through delivering training for staff across three federated schools. One of my proudest moments at the school was being part of a team of students and teachers who, through working collaboratively, were able to plan, build and launch our own weather balloon camera to successfully capture film footage of the curvature of the earth.

Prior to this appointment, I undertook two years of training in the prestigious Teach First Leadership Development Programme at a school specialising in creative teaching through its emphasis on the arts, music and philosophy. I taught two Year 4 classes with a high percentage of behavioural and special educational needs, whom with my support all achieved or exceeded their respective academic targets. Working with these two classes, I have gained experience of experience of supporting children with severe emotional and behavioural needs (including children in care), Special Educational Needs (ADHD, Dyslexia, Global Delay) and EAL (Arabic, Lithuanian, Polish). Moreover, I oversaw creative initiatives to successfully combat disengaged writers, especially boys in Key Stage 2. In my spare time, I developed a nurture group, based around gardening, for seven boys with emotional and behavioural needs. Furthermore, I ran a weekly science club which gave students the opportunities to undertake projects around themes such as animals and their habitats, the human body and space exploration.

In my teaching practice, I have been able to draw upon my extensive experience of working with children in museums. In my work as Education Officer for the Museum of Science and Industry (MoSI) in Manchester, I would deliver daily educational sessions for schools, from classroom-based workshops to planetarium shows, according to the specific needs of the visiting school. I was also responsible for establishing an innovative programme of events around storytelling and sensory play for children under five. In doing this, I gained an excellent working knowledge of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage.

I am currently educated to postgraduate level. For achieving a first-class undergraduate degree result, I received an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to study for a Masters degree in Museum Studies, specialising in education and public outreach. I went on to work for four years delivering educational sessions for a variety of schools and youth groups as part of well-known cultural institutions in the North West. For example, I helped co-develop the first public education programme for the historic John Rylands Library in Manchester, designing creative activities such as child-friendly architectural trails and drama workshops for schools and families alike.

I use accurate assessment to pinpoint areas of need at tailor my teaching accordingly in a way that maximises both learning and enjoyment of pupils. I have always loved working with children and enjoy helping enable young minds to flourish and grow to their full potential

I use accurate assessment to determine exact areas of need for my teaching. I will then work with the student to develop a programme of teaching tailored to their educational needs as well as their personality and interests, allowing learning to be both challenging and fun.
