About Daniel
Literature has always been a particular passion of mine because it brings together many of the subjects I am interested in, including philosophy, art, culture, entertainment and linguistics. I'm at the end of a BA in Creative Writing and English at Birkbeck, University of London, where I particularly enjoyed studying poetry and avant-garde literature.
Alongside my studies, I gained experience tutoring and mentoring other students. During my gap year (2022-2023), I provided informal paid tutoring to about five GCSE students in English Language and Literature. I helped students understand the requirements of their examinations, worked through past papers with them, discussed set texts and provided guidance on essays and exam technique.
At university, I also mentored fellow students in creative writing and poetry, helping them develop areas such as story structure, style and experimental approaches to contemporary storytelling. My own creative writing dissertation was a 5,000-word piece of fiction particularly influenced by the work of Marcel Proust and Vladimir Nabokov.
I also have experience in editing and working collaboratively on writing projects. In sixth form, I co-founded and served as Editor-in-Chief of my school newspaper, which involved editing other students' work and helping to develop the publication.
I am a friendly, patient and calm tutor, but I also have high standards and enjoy helping motivated students push their work further. I particularly enjoy working with students who are already engaged with English and want to move beyond simply meeting the requirements of an exam towards producing genuinely sophisticated analysis and writing.
Outside of tutoring, I continue to write and read extensively, with particular interests in poetry, experimental literature, literary style and the relationship between language and thought.

I am a First-Class graduate in Creative Writing & English from Birkbeck, University of London, and I offer online tutoring in GCSE English Language and Literature, A-Level English Literature, and creative writing, including poetry.
My GCSE and A-Level lessons are primarily exam-focused, with an emphasis on developing the analytical and writing skills needed to achieve the highest grades. Rather than simply teaching students what to write, I work through texts with them to develop their ability to identify important details, analyse language and structure, construct sophisticated interpretations, and express their ideas clearly and convincingly in essays.
My usual approach is to work through a text or exam question together before moving on to practical exercises, essay planning, or written responses. I adapt my teaching to each student's strengths, weaknesses and preferred way of learning, and I am happy to focus on particular texts, topics or examination skills where needed.
GCSE lessons are typically 60 minutes, while A-Level lessons are typically 90 minutes, allowing sufficient time for detailed discussion and written practice. Creative writing lessons are typically 60 minutes.
I have previous tutoring experience, having tutored GCSE students during my gap year and supported classmates throughout university. I am comfortable working with both AQA and Edexcel specifications.
Alongside examination preparation, I also offer advanced creative writing and poetry tuition, drawing on my academic background and experience as a writer. These sessions can focus on developing style, structure, imagery, voice, poetic technique and close attention to language.
My lessons are particularly suited to students who are already motivated and want to develop their work towards the highest possible standard.
