About Simon

I am a qualified teacher (PGCE) of over 10 years and have been a head of department for the at least 5 of those years. Therefore, my understanding of the courses is excellent and I have always achieved excellent added value in my classes. I truly care about the grades pupils get as well as the process behind them. I have previously been an examiner for OCR & AQA at both GCSE and AL and am a current examiner for the IB SEHS course. Before finding teaching as a calling, I read for a BSc in Sports Science (Physiology) at undergraduate level, where I obtained a first class degree, before going on to study an MSc in Strength & Conditioning at postgraduate level. I then worked in the field of sports science for a couple of years with youth populations before moving into teaching and gaining my PGCE.

About the lesson

I am happy to teach theoretical content, help with exam technique and paper practice as well as aid coursework elements too. I like to teach in an interactive, positive manner using online whiteboards which allows pupils to actively engage and develop a two way relationship. I will show enthusiasm and use praise, but I also recognise the place for discipline, independence and self-driven work!

1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
My chosen field started young, maybe 17 or 18 years old as a few of my teachers said I had the temperament for it. Tutoring didn't come until far later on once I felt comfortable and confident in what I was doing!
2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My area of speciality is the physiology and the biomechanics. I love how the body is such a fascinating thing and how that then applies to sport, exercise and physical activity. It is seen as the harder bit of the PE course so I enjoy working with students to get them to understand it and feel confident in their knowledge of it.
3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My PE teachers were all role models to me when I was at school, and I have been lucky to have had good mentors and teachers around me as I have developed in the profession. I won't name them though!
4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, understanding, clarity.
5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I am not sure I have one, but thinking about the previous question, I value how much teachers and tutors can impact students outlook on subjects and help inspire them to learn and succeed. I genuinely get a huge buzz helping students to love the subject and to achieve the grades they want.
6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
It seems to be getting harder and harder to achieve the top grade in my subject due to the academic demands but also the stringent non-examined elements with the performance and the coursework elements. Therefore, every mark counts and I think I can help quite a bit with that.
7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Teaching I definitely see as a vocation. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon a job that I genuinely love doing. Passions away from that stem in sport and exercise, of course!
8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?
My experience, knowledge and understanding of the requirements of my subject and my courses! And my ability to get this across to students!
