I usually start up with knowing the person that I'm going to teach so that in the future they aren't shy about asking me things. First, I would like my students to come up with problems that they can't solve problems, answer questions or write essays that they need help with. After this, I create topic tests of my own and get the students to complete it, grade it and feedback it back to them.
The lesson structure is the following:
-5 minutes of life updates if the student is willing- whether it's just a quick update about their life or just something that's bothering them
-45 minutes of intense learning with specific topic orientated problems/essays
10 minutes- plan the next lesson with the student
