About Michael
I’m a reporting lead at a local authority in the UK, with 17 years’ experience across SQL, Power BI, Business Objects and Excel. I spend my days turning large, complicated datasets into reports that people actually use, and that’s the skill I want to pass on.
I didn’t come into data the traditional way. My degree is in Sound Engineering, and I learnt SQL on the job, so I know what it’s like to start without a technical background. That shapes how I teach: plain explanations, no jargon for its own sake, and plenty of patience with the “why doesn’t this work?” moments.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, an analyst who wants to stop relying on Excel, or someone preparing for a data role, I’ll help you get there.

My lessons are built around what you need. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll work from the fundamentals up to advanced techniques in a structured way. If you already know the basics, or have a specific problem at work, we can go straight to the parts that matter to you.
I’ve spent 17 years in data reporting, most of it in the social care sector, writing complex queries against large, volatile databases. I learnt SQL on the job, and I’ve trained colleagues the same way: by solving real problems.
I’ve also sat through plenty of corporate training, and most of it was padding. My lessons skip that. You’ll learn the techniques you’ll actually use (joins, aggregations, window functions, CTEs, query optimisation, and how to tackle real-world data), with exercises based on the kind of problems you’ll meet at work.
