Deborah - Bridgwater - Support for Students with Autism

Methodology

I have had over 20 Years experience, and have a passion for personalised learning and firmly believe in a multi-sensory approach making all work exciting.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Anything re; Maths, all ages to GCSE Special Needs, English, and Handwriting. I have specialist experience in autism, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and dyslexia. I can arrange base line assessments in dyslexia and dyscalculia. Afterwards , for a fee ,I can supply a report ,with evidence for the school to intervene ,in order to get specialist provision.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Cert of Ed Distinction Bed Hons in Special Needs MED Maths, NPQH MAPS at Med level. Level 2 certificate from Ofsted which means my teaching was outstanding.

- How much do you charge?

I do not charge for the first session ,as I use this to get to know the student and parents. On the first session we discuss what interventions are required to accelerate the child's learning. I assess the child and plan future lessons from this and hope to work closely with the child's school wherever possible. Every lesson is £25 00 per hour thereafter.I also ask for mileage if over 5 miles from Bridgwater.

- Where do you teach?

I live near Bridgwater, and usually travel to the student's home. My work is around Taunton, Bridgwater, Weston Super Mare and within North Somerset, Somerset and South Bristol. Students can also come to my home.

- When are you available?

I am available weekdays, evenings, Saturdays and can arrange tuition during school holidays..

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach KS1 - KS4 which would be to GCSE.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE'S and functional skills, SATS, IELTS. And common entrance exams 7, 11 and 13 plus.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

20 years of experience from teaching Primary, being a headteacher for 10 years in three different schools. Teaching young offenders upto 18 years and also lecturing 16 - 18 year olds functional skills and GCSE in Maths in a local college. Also, teaching in an EBD school age 10-16. Being a SENCO and making strategic decisions.I also have experience writing material for a soft ware company for dyslexia, dyscalculia, and children on the autistic spectrum.I also have taught GCSE Maths at an FE College. I am now offering a new service, and will travel to tutor for blocks of time, especially if it is holiday breaks, anywhere in the UK. I would also consider short blocks abroad. Please email me if you require this service.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes. I have a current DBS.

- Where and with whom did you train?

UWE , Bristol University and Exeter University.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

NAHT. IFL and registered with GTC.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I have been tutoring for over 5 years. Some of my students have complex needs and I have supported the parents in getting them the support required, so they can make good progress and receive the correct provision. Often, I have written educational assessments to support the statementing process. All my students gain confidence, learn and make good progress; some moving as much as 1 level within a six month period. I have also had a good pass rate with GCSE Maths and English. My students enjoy me coming and they say it is fun. Please read their comments. We work in a multi-sensory way. Working with the schools gives the child more chance of success, as we can work in tandem. This year all of my GCSE students have achieved their grades, which they were working towards. Achieved 2016 100 per cent pass rate.

I would recomend Debbie as a tutor, as she has made learning fun and not at all boring.

I have dyslexia and Debbie has encouraged me to get my words on paper and not be frightened to have a go, even if my spellings are wrong. I have gained confidence and my family feel that I have made massive steps forward with my writing.

I have been awarded a golden certificate for " effort to improve my writing at home and school," which makes me feel good about myself.

I have enjoyed working with Debbie this year, as she has made Maths easy for me to understand. I have improved in my n umber work and will now tackle difficult sums with confidence. Today I received a gold award for my Maths from my headteacher. Not many children get these.

I have worked with Debbie on my English. At the beginning of the year my grade was 5C. I have just achieved a 6C. The progress has been because Debbie has given me confidence; I can now plan my work in an organised way. Before,I
had the ideas but found it difficult to start my writing. This has improved my grades in all subjects. We have worked on my comprehension tackling questions and being shown how to answer them. I am grateful to my tutor.

I struggle with number work and word problems as a result of my dyslexia. Debbie has supported me with my mental recall of numbers using fun activities for me to retain the information. This increased my confidence and enabled me to complete Year 6 SATS. My grade improved to level 3 so I could be entered. I have just had my SATS results and achieved a Level 4. Thank you Debbie.

Working with Debbie, my GCSE grades at the end of Year 10 have increased in Maths and Literacy from D to C grades. I am now writing more quality material across all subjects and my confidence has also increased considerably. I have dyslexia so organising my thoughts onto paper does not come easily.

I have worked with Debbie since Year 8 on both Maths and English. I am feeling extremely confident in attaining at least a B in Maths. My predicted grade has escalated and Debbie has given me the confidence. With regard to my English, she has provided me with strategies which have made a difference and should give me the C 's I need to continue with a levels. Thank you Debbie. You have understood my needs.
