About Eliza

Hello! I am an English tutor with over 4 years of experience and more than 200 students taught. English has always been the subject I cared most about, because it is ultimately about learning to think precisely and communicate effectively — skills that matter in every area of life, not just in examinations. I try to convey this broader significance in every lesson, while remaining practically focused on the specific skills and requirements of each student's assessment. I work with students at GCSE, A-Level, IB, and university level on literary analysis, language skills, essay and argument writing, and creative writing. I am experienced with all major examination frameworks and tailor every lesson to the specific demands of the student's course. My feedback is detailed, specific, and always constructive — I do not just mark what is wrong but explain clearly why it falls short and precisely what the student can do to improve it. I am particularly effective with students who have good ideas but struggle to express them with sufficient clarity and precision on the page — a very common gap that is rarely addressed explicitly in classroom settings. Closing that gap, through careful attention to both the structure of argument and the craft of writing, is something I have become highly skilled at over four years of focused tutoring practice.

What distinguishes excellent English work from competent English work is rarely knowledge — most students who have studied a text know it well enough to write about it. The distinguishing factor is almost always analytical precision: the ability to make specific, well-evidenced claims about how a text works and what it achieves, rather than making general, impressionistic statements about what it is about. I teach this precision as a concrete, learnable skill, because it is one that almost all students can develop significantly with the right instruction.I do this by working closely with texts in every session, modelling the process of close reading and analytical thinking in real time before asking students to practise it themselves. I show students what I notice when I read analytically, why certain features of a text seem significant, how to move from observation to interpretation to evaluation in a logical sequence. I then set students exercises at each stage and give detailed feedback that shows them specifically where their analysis is vague or unsupported and exactly how to make it more precise and convincing. For exam preparation, I cover the specific demands of each question type, teach efficient planning methods that produce well-structured responses under time pressure, and use extensive past paper practice with detailed mark-scheme analysis. I also pay significant attention to the quality of students' written expression — because even good analytical thinking fails to earn its marks if it is expressed confusingly or in ways that undermine its apparent authority.
