About Diane

I began teaching handwriting to help children on my Hackney housing estate 27 years ago. I started helping them with their homework and sorted out their handwriting along the way. I continued to teach a bit of handwriting to all my English pupils and then started teaching handwriting as a separate subject.

I've worked with children from the age of five and adults from 18 to pension age. I've worked with right and left-handed children. I've worked with children and adults who just needed extra help and children and adults with autism, learning difficulties, dyslexia, motor skill problems, developmental delay and visual impairments.

I have worked in a primary school as a learning support assistant with children with disabilities or learning difficulties.

I have worked in educational units for secondary pupils who have been excluded from school.

The saying is, "No pain, no gain." My philosophy is just the opposite. I like to make learning as easy and enjoyable as possible for both children and adults. If learning is a struggle, come to me and let me take the heat out of the situation.

MY SUBJECTS:

Handwriting:

I teach handwriting to children and adults. Handwriting is surprisingly easy to correct and doesn't require many lessons, so even if you think your handwriting or your child's handwriting is disastrous, don't hesitate. I began teaching handwriting as an adjunct to my English work when I found that nearly every child I worked with wasn't holding the pencil right or forming letters properly. I developed my own technique for a quick transformation and it has worked a treat.

My lessons involve correcting posture, correcting the grip, using a variety of implements, learning how to form and join each letter and building up speed.

I start right in on the first lesson and don't need to see samples of your handwriting or your child's handwriting, so don't worry about that! We will start completely fresh to eliminate bad habits. You or your child will learn everything in about two lessons and after that it's practice to reinforce the new good habits.

If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, I teach printing in a way that will lead on to joined up writing later. From Year 3 onwards, I teach joined up or proper cursive. I know a variety of styles and tend to go with whatever the child's school prefers, with the exception of a few letters which work better in cursive.

Both kids and adults enjoy the lessons and are surprised at how quickly they get on. Some discover that they're actually naturals at it; they just didn't get the right start. For children, getting their handwriting right can help with their writing in school; a lot of kids don't produce much writing in class because they find it difficult. For adults getting their handwriting sorted can be life-changing.

Touch typing:

Children love learning touch typing and it is very easy for them- like a game. The reason I encourage children to learn to type is so that they can produce long documents swiftly and accurately later on in life, instead of hunting and pecking. I teach touch-typing alongside general English lessons or handwriting lessons, using an online programme and monitoring their posture, hand position, etc. I learned to type on an IBM electric typewrite when I was 14 and found it a very useful skill.

MY QUALIFICATIONS:

BA in Theatre Arts Performance with Great Distinction from California State University Long Beach (1979).

Cambridge University Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults Grade A (2002)

PGCE in Literacy (Post-Compulsory) from the Institute of Education, University of London (2009)

Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills IFL (2010).

City & Guilds Certificate in Pottery Skills from Hackney College (1996).

My fee structure:
£40 for a lesson at your home.
£30 for a lesson if you come to my home. I give a discount for two or more lessons a week in my home and also give free extra time.

If you live outside my area (please see below) and want a home visit, I can only do this if you are within quick and easy reach by public transport from my home or other work. Contact me if you wish to discuss your situation.

I am happy to teach small groups and charge £10ph for each extra person.

MY AREAS:

I generally teach children in their own homes. Adult students usually come to me. My area is roughly N15, N16 and E5, which is South Tottenham, Stamford Hill, Stoke Newington and Upper Clapton. My local stations are South Tottenham and Seven Sisters.

I can go to convenient locations on the Victoria and Piccadilly lines and the Gospel Oak to Barking overground line or areas reached by an easy bus journey.

I currently teach in South Tottenham, Turnpike Lane, Crouch End, Muswell Hill and Ilford.

MY AVAILABILITY:

General availability:
Children: after school, Sundays, half-terms and holidays.
Adults: daytime, evenings, Sundays and holidays.

Current availability:
Children: I have the Tuesday and Thursday after school slots free. I am available for special tuition over half-terms and holidays.
Adults: My adult schedule changes frequently, so contact me for current availability. I am also available for more intensive tuition over holidays.

I will contact you initially by email, usually on the same day I receive your email. Please check your junk email if you think you haven't heard from me.
When you contact me, please tell me roughly where you live, e.g., "by Finsbury Park station" or "near the junction of Seven Sisters and Holloway Rd." That way I know whether it's possible to fit you in my timetable. Sometimes I can squeeze in a lesson if it works well with my other bookings. Thanks.

AGES & LEVELS:

I work with all ages, from reception up to pensioners.

ONLINE TUTORING:

I don't do online tutoring! My approach is very gentle, low-key and personal and requires my physical presence.

MY PERSONAL MESSAGE:

Don't think that because you are struggling that you will never learn or never improve. Anyone can learn, anyone can improve. The right teacher will show you that the work isn't as difficult as you think and that your abilities are greater than you imagine. And don't think it is too late for you to learn. It is never too late!
