About Marco
Dip ABRSM and LRSM in cello performance. I grew up in Italy and started playing the cello as a kid. While studying architecture at the university of Florence I played in various orchestras and chamber ensembles. Since moving to the UK almost 20 years ago I’ve been part of the incredibly rich musical scene in and outside London. I play and perform in chamber music ensembles such as string quartets, piano trios etc. and in several orchestras, spanning from symphonic repertoire to baroque and opera. Recent engagements have been playing continuo for baroque masterpieces such as Bach St John Passion, Purcell Dido and Aeneas, John Blow Venus and Adonis (“A particular highlight was the fine continuo playing from […]Marco Russo on cello.” Venus and Adonis review by Planethugill).

I find the whole teaching experience very rewarding: the feeling of seeing a pupil fully engaged during the lesson and eager to practise for the following one is hard to beat. I believe in teaching and playing the cello in a natural, relaxed and active way, developing a positive relationship between the player and the instrument. The lessons are tailored to suit the particular level and needs of the pupil, never forgetting that the cello is a beautiful medium for making music and having fun. Although I started my cello experience in Italy, my direct experience as a candidate with the ABRSM system gives me a precious insight in what it means to prepare and successfully sit for an exam.

Marco is a wonderful musician.
His great love and knowledge of the cello combined with his fine personality make him an excellent teacher.
I am confident in his ability to develop his pupils potential with patience and care.I have always enjoyed working with Marco in both orchestral and chamber music settings. He comes to cello playing with a fresh perspective after a recent career shift and is a calm, thoughtful musician with a passion for problem-solving. I believe he will be an attentive teacher keen to help his students develop their technique whilst sharing his love of classical music.
Marco is a friendly and patient teacher and a great player. I’d thoroughly recommend him to anyone wanting to start or improve their cello playing.
