About Yun

I have taught piano, music theory and musicianship based on ABRSM syllabus for 15 years, helping my pupils to obtain excellent results on both practical and theory; 94% above Merit in ABRSM piano exam and 100% above Merit in ABRSM theory exam. For past 3 years, I have also taught AOSs (both GCSE and A-Level) of various exam boards including Edexcel, OCR and AQA at schools as well as private pupils. Last year, two of my private pupils obtained 9s on GCSE (Edexcel).

I obtained BM (Bachelor of Music), MM (Master of Music) and DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in the US and further studied for Post-Graduate Diploma on piano performance at the Royal Academy of Music (2001-2). I also taught at the Royal College of Music Junior Department as a deputy teacher (2004-2010). In addition to my degrees, my other qualifications include LRAM (Licentiate by Royal Academy of Music), Dip ABRSM & CT ABRSM in Instrumental Teaching as well as PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Teaching) in Secondary Music Education.

The spectrum of my pupils has been wide, e.g., from young children with no prior experience in music learning, to serious upper schoolers with specific goals and timeline in mind in order to gain meritorious UCAS points for university entrance. Some started lessons as a hobby then ended up working for music scholarships. Likewise, some continued gaining confidence through positive experiences in music exams. I enjoy looking after individuality of my pupils and tailoring my lessons in accordance with their individual needs and persuits.

For lessons on piano and musicianship, I only teach individually. For lessons on music theory, and the GCSE/A-Level exam preparation, I have only taught individually but can consider a paired-up arrangement.

My piano lessons, typically preparing for the ABRSM exam, are normally structured to include all components of ABRSM practical exam, i.e. scales/arpeggio, pieces, aural training and sight-reading, if not in every lesson then in rotation. Having worked for CT ABRSM (Certificate of Instrumental Teaching), I long ago observed the merit of lateral teaching and simultaneous learning.

Lateral teaching is based on teacher's ability to, first, grasp what proficiency each component is aiming for pupils to achieve, then to design each lesson, maximizing the benefit of inter-related methods among those components. Another key belief in my teaching is to nurture pupils' ability to become an independent learner, and this approach usually creates extremely positive dynamics in pupils' simultaneous learning. It is true each pupil is different but I have been fortunate enough to consistently observe the merit of my teaching methods and approach.

For lessons on music theory and AOSs of GCSE/A-level, I tailor the structure of each lesson, reflecting the pace and progress in individual learning. None of my pupils in my 15-year-teaching received lower than Merit in ABRSM Theory Exam. 10 pupils have scored perfect 100 points, and the numerous pupils have received Distinction. I prepare my pupils meticulously. For GCSE and A-Level, I enhance the components in AOSs on top of what pupils learn at school. Having taught at schools too, I do understand school's timeline as well as what is expected in GCSE and A-level exams, which makes my help in preparation even more effective. In addition, I also help pupils to improve on the music dictation/listening section of the exam, which I have seen many pupils struggle. These lessons on GCSE and A-Level are tailored to achieve the best effectiveness, hence highly flexible in terms of methodology, encompassing bullet-pointing, background summary, score analysis, quiz, fact-check cards, grouping answers, elements mapping, mock tests, etc.
