About Flavia

My love for chess sparked at age 8, fuelled by a competitive spirit. From surpassing friends to winning championships, I became a provincial and national youth champion for consecutive years. Notable achievements include a second-place finish in the Pan American U-20 Championship (2012) and 10th place in the World Youth Chess Championship (2011), earning the FIDE Master title at 15. With a peak FIDE rating of 2190, I now prioritise teaching to share my passion and knowledge.

From 8 to 18, I played professionally and became a provincial and national youth champion for consecutive years. Notable achievements include second place in the Pan American U-20 Championship (2012) and 10th place in the World Youth Chess Championship (2011). I also earned the FIDE Master title at 15, with a peak rating of 2190.

After that, I took a break from competitive play. Why did I stop? It’s nearly impossible to make a living from chess unless you’re in the top 10 in the world. Now, I still play occasionally, just one or two tournaments per year, but I prioritize my lessons because teaching is my full-time job, and I enjoy it even more!

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

My love for chess began at the age of 8, when my father taught me how to play. It quickly became a strong bond between us and a very special part of my childhood. If you have a child, I highly recommend teaching them chess, it’s absolutely worth it, both for their development and for the meaningful connection it creates.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

My lessons are built using material from renowned chess authors such as Polgar, Nimzowitsch, Aagaard, Brunia, Van Wijgerden, De la Villa, and Miguel Illescas, among others.
My specialty is fostering logical thinking, helping students analyze any position strategically and consistently choose the best possible moves.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

Learning chess is largely about recognizing patterns and understanding how to apply them in real games. With so much scattered information available today, it’s essential to have guidance from someone who understands the correct order in which to study these concepts. That’s why I’ve developed my own lesson plans, tailored to each student’s rating and goals, based on my experience with what truly helps players progress to the next level.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Focus on understanding the game rather than obsessing over rating points. When students develop strong logical thinking and learn how to analyze positions properly, results come naturally as a consequence of good decision-making.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Chess excites me most when I discover beautiful tactics or create clear, well-structured plans on the board. Those moments of clarity and creativity are deeply satisfying and keep my passion strong.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

From ages 8 to 18, I played chess professionally and became a provincial and national youth champion for several consecutive years. Some highlights include second place in the Pan American U-20 Championship (2012) and 10th place in the World Youth Chess Championship (2011). I earned the FIDE Master title at age 15 and reached a peak rating of 2190. More recently, I defeated a FIDE Master rated 2359, which was a rewarding personal milestone.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Very often. Children are incredible learners and absorb new concepts quickly. Adults, on the other hand, bring deep passion and commitment. With perseverance, they are capable of achieving excellent results and frequently surprise themselves.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I truly enjoy being a chess coach. It’s my full-time profession, yet it never feels like work because I genuinely have fun teaching. I’m grateful to dedicate my life to what I love most: chess.
