About Pen
Hello! I’m Pen and I’ve been a musician since I started playing the piano at five years old, and music remains the biggest source of joy in my life. I’m currently in my second year at the University of Edinburgh studying philosophy and maths, but I fill all my spare time with music, whether that’s music directing a theatre show, singing in a barbershop quartet or just jamming on the piano with my friends. I love music most when I’m making it with other people.
I have studied the piano to Grade 8 Distinction, and have also played extensively in ensembles, including the Edinburgh University musical theatre society and the Wandsworth Music Service jazz band, at venues including the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall. I also play cello to Grade 8, double bass, bass guitar and drums. I studied music at A-Level, achieving an A* overall with A* in performance.
I’m a friendly, enthusiastic and supportive person and I’ll bring that into my teaching. Beginner lessons can sometimes feel like a chore, but when you’re being taught to understand the music, not just play the notes, and are guided through it by a kind, patient and unthreatening teacher, learning the piano can be fun and rewarding. I look forward to getting to know you or your young person.

Having learned the piano from a young age in a positive and musical environment, I know what good teaching looks like. I am keen to share my enthusiasm for the piano, and to give young musicians an exciting and rewarding first experience of the piano. I am an experienced musician looking to expand into the world of piano tuition; I bring energy and good humour to my teaching, coming from a family of teachers, and I understand the importance of young people enjoying their early lessons.
I would recommend weekly 30-minute lessons for beginners, and I can travel within the Edinburgh area to your home. I believe learning music theory should be an embedded part of learning the piano, but I can also offer standalone theory lessons up to ABRSM Grade 5.
I believe it is important for beginners on the piano to study with someone who is kind and supportive, and I can be that person. But it's also important to build an understanding and love of music, without piano lessons being a chore or struggle. I bring enthusiasm and friendliness along with my musicianship, and I would love to hear from you.
