I love teaching. It became an inseparable part of my life. I teach learners to think, be compassionate, and warm-hearted, and they teach me many things as good friends in their turn every day. Many of my students became English teachers too. I am very proud of this fact, and especially when one of my students wrote in her letter to me that I was a teacher of the future. I’ve got a vague comprehension of what she meant but I think it’s owing to my actually a very kind character. Many teachers think it is better for all if you are very strict with having your students scared even to move at the lesson. But to my mind teacher should cultivate a love for learning through caring and respectful attitude towards the students. Love and respect to even a little pupil! Be a good example as a fair teacher and a caring person for all!
Affective Humanistic approach with its preference to music, fine arts, games, choosing a new identity, dramatic interpretations, positive reinforcement including respectful attitude towards feelings of the learners of English as a second language, together with Communicative approach developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills are the most relatable to me and the way I teach.
These approaches appeal to me more than others because they develop speaking skill which is in great demand nowadays. They combine many techniques that allow developing love and interest in other cultures and places, the motivation for learning English as a second language.
There were some specific aspects from certain approaches that I liked most especially teaching culture and morality in Grammar translation approach, which prevailed during Home Reading lessons when the learners read original or adapted texts at home and translated or retold them in the classroom. Dialogues memorization and visual aids from Audio-Lingual approach were also sometimes useful. But approaches that help to develop speaking skills are most important in my opinion; they are communicative and effective humanistic approaches.
My teaching style will best meet the needs of my students and motivate them to learn in the following way, namely depending on the goals of my learners I will choose the content and techniques that will most match their needs appropriately. Positive encouragement will increase their motivation.
Teach, model and question is a basic model. I mainly use it in teaching like many other of my colleagues, but when the learners are advanced it is more advisable to use the technique of Inductive Reasoning “model, infer, elaborate” when the learners demonstrate their ability to make a conclusion for a rule and explain it in their own words on the basis of a given model. Spaced repetition practice is often used but such techniques as retrieval practice and interleaving practice are new for me. I will try to use them as many teachers use in their practice. Combine teaching strategies such as dual coding of words and visual aids, concrete examples, elaboration, scaffolding, presenting content which is memorable, usable and durable, “sticky”, attention-getters presenting something surprising and related to the lesson content, warm-ups that are usually based on the learned material to recall it, “word of the day” from Oxford dictionary, and warm language.
