About Maaike
Hi there! My name is Maaike and I look forward to being your tutor :) I am 24 years old and have recently returned from teaching in South Korea for three years. I have over 10 years' experience being a tutor, working in schools as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Mentor, and being a Foreign English Teacher. I love meeting new people and chatting over shared interests - and using them to help deepen students' understanding of the content during our lessons. Previous students and parents have consistently praised my ability to make the lessons fun and content relatable by efforts of familiarising myself with students' interests. In this way, using them to help my students understand how we use analysis and attributing 'terminology' to things we do subconsciously every day. For example, to help my student (female, 17 with interest in fashion) understand the idea of 'discourse' in an essay (a public discussion of a topic or debate), I compared it to the change in attitude towards the exclusivity and quality of luxury brands such as Gucci in recent years.

My lessons are usually 1 hour in length and are for students of 13+ years old. I am an English Literature with French graduate and have been tutoring for those subjects since 2014. Furthermore, I have recently returned after 3 years in South Korea where I was teaching English as a Foreign Language. I am a great advocate for creativity and flexibility in lessons. Not all methods of teaching and learning work for everyone and I pride myself on how I adapt and tailor my lessons specifically to the individual involved to maximise their learning (and fun whilst learning). With this type of engaging approach, it will in turn develop the student's skills and make them feel more motivated and confident in their progress. It is important to make materials and lessons that not only interest the students but to create an environment that students feel safe to make mistakes, ask for help when needed, and to question things that they don't understand. From my experience, in this way, students have felt encouraged and empowered to be proactive in their own learning thus deepening their knowledge and understanding. The techniques that I use depend on the student and what needs improvement e.g. expanding vocabulary, planning an essay, exam timing, how to analyse a passage/poem, learning analytical terminology. One of the simplest ways that I help my students to improve is to guide them through their past written content e.g. re-visiting old essays, looking at it with new eyes, making little adjustments, and re-writing it. My students have marvelled at how with this process their writing style has elevated and become more sophisticated.
