About Karen
As a student, you have limited time for each task. The pressure on you is enormous and I respect that. I make a plan, meet you on time, and approach every challenge with a can-do attitude. You are my top priority. You are why I teach. You can be certain that you are getting the best when you choose me. I hold a doctorate in English from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. For over two decades, I have been grading students. I have assessed thousands of oral presentations and research papers and I can share what you need to do to excel. The reason I entered this career was to make a difference in students' lives. I enjoy the stimulation of designing and delivering classes, meeting students, and watching them grow into more confident people. I am a native of New England, having been born in Connecticut and raised in Massachusetts. The local brainy culture made me crazy for books and learning! My husband and I moved to Seattle in 1995 and I began teaching at the University of Washington. I also helped out at the local community colleges, teaching all levels of English. During COVID, I realized that I wanted to be back in New England and we moved to Providence, Rhode Island. The culture and climate of Rhode Island are both very agreeable, and the warmth of the people is energizing! Therefore, I am invested in Rhode Island's rising generation, and I look forward to meeting you and hearing all about your goals.

Methodology
My teaching method involves listening carefully to the student and reading the homework instructions with them. I encourage them to give me their rough ideas, and I point out what they may not have considered. We talk, and then the student writes and I give support. Then we read over the writing and make a plan for development. My students do their work and return to our next meeting with more writing than they thought possible.
--If the student is working on a research paper, I show them how to look for sources, how to assess their value, and then how to use them. I teach paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting.
--If the student is applying to colleges, I explain the process of assessing a school, writing to persuade, and sounding like yourself.
--If the student is working on an IB paper, a master's thesis, or a dissertation, I listen, read, and provide commentary to help them with their particular concerns.
--If the client is working on a tenure and promotion dossier or publication, I can assist with correcting grammar and style.
Past students remark that I have exceeded their expectations. That is all because I enjoy helping students gain confidence and achieve their goals!

As a student returning to school after a long hiatus, my writing skills needed some dusting off to reach their highest potential. I met Dr. Karen Kurt Teal in one of my first classes upon my return to college.
In a tech writing class, she gently nudged clarity, authenticity of voice, and technical perfection out of my writing drafts. Often, these drafts became more engaging as they lost unnecessary, superfluous embellishment.
Kindness underpinned her edits. As a published author, she understood how attached writers get to their words and compassionately urged clarity over word count.
Her personal mastery of many writing types allowed her to share her perspective with ease.
As a bonus, her wicked sharp sense of humor lightened every interaction.
I had the privilege to have Karen Teal as my teacher for the Technical Writing class of the Biomedical Regulatory Affairs Master’s program at the University of Washington. Professor Teal’s class had a critical impact on my professional writing skills in general. Her class exposed and prepared students to a variety of writing platforms, including regulatory documents, real world exercises, analytical essays, and various forms of communications. All this extensive curriculum did not prevent Professor Teal’s class from being dynamic, interactive, and fun. I was always very enthusiast to go to her class, even after a long day at work.
I am delighted to recommend Karen as an outstanding English teacher. During my time as her student, I was consistently impressed by her dedication to making every lesson engaging, informative, and enjoyable. Karen has a remarkable ability to explain complex literary concepts and grammatical rules in ways that are easy to understand. Her passion for literature and language inspired me to improve my writing, reading, and speaking skills significantly. What truly sets her apart is her commitment to the success of each student. She was always available for extra help and took the time to provide constructive feedback on assignments.
I am incredibly grateful for the positive impact Karen has had on my academic journey. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and caring English teacher.
She is amazing in the way she reviews any form of writing! Patient, critical and supportive. Explains the need for punctuations and helps us understand her reviews. I learnt a great deal in just 6 months of learning from her in my graduate program. I am sure anyone will benefit from her vast experience and knowledge.
Karen was my technical writing instructor for multiple courses during my Masters program in Biomedical Regulatory Affairs at the University of Washington. Karen's enthusiasm and commitment to bettering her students' writing skills were unquestionable. My technical writing skills were developed and sharpened by Karen's instruction and critical feedback on writing assignments. Karen's courses successfully prepared me for technical writing in the pharmaceutical industry.
I had the distinct pleasure of being a student in Dr. Karen’s medical writing course during my time as a graduate student at the University of Washington. Among the various classes I took as part of my master’s program, her course stood out as one of the most meaningful and unforgettable experiences. Dr. Karen’s engaging teaching style, deep expertise, and dedication to her students created a learning environment that was both intellectually stimulating and supportive.
The impact of Dr. Karen’s course on my subsequent career cannot be overstated. Her clear instruction and practical insights into medical writing have been invaluable as I navigated my professional path in the industry. The skills and knowledge I gained from her class have empowered me to excel in my field and continue to influence my work to this day. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Karen for her exceptional teaching and enduring influence on her students. There is no one who is more caring, or thorough than Karen. She is kind and compassionate, while also being honest. I highly recommend her without any reservations.
