About Tim
My name is Tim Pearson and I have a lot of teaching, learning support and tutoring experience with students of a wide variety of needs, ages and backgrounds. I have a Masters with Merit in English Literature in the field of Victorian Studies, a 2:1 in Humanities with Classical Studies and A Grade A levels in English and Classics. I can work with anyone from school to university level. I believe that helping students to excel academically can go hand in hand with deepening their enjoyment of the texts and their ability to express their own insights.

For school students with reading, comprehension or articulation difficulties, I read through the texts or parts of the text with them out loud, using my own experience of the text to bring out the way the writer uses their language. I also set them imaginative exercises on the texts such as pictures, monologues, and descriptive recreations of certain characters and scenes, asking them to use their five senses to step into the world of the book. I learnt quite a few of these techniques from my Waldorf Education training, and the importance of an imaginative approach to literature is being increasingly grasped in mainstream education. I use this a foundation for a more academic analysis of what's going on, for the really high marks go to students who can show how a writer brings out their meaning through language. And I think its very hard to do this without doing these these prior imaginative exercises, which feed a more nuanced appreciation of how a writers language creates worlds, ideas and meanings.
For A Level and University students wanting help with exams or thesis writing, I use a similar approach in a far more focused form, in which I encourage the student to continually imaginatively engage with the subject matter alongside making their analyses, so that the former is always feeding into the latter. The lessons I give are a combination of imaginative and analytical discussion while I facilitate the student's attempt to make their own insights, and express them in written form.
