About Matthew
Hi! I’m Matthew. I'm a British CELTA-qualified English language teacher with an additional Business English teaching certificate. I offer online lessons to adult English language learners. I live in the beautiful city of Oxford, and I'm a graduate of Oxford University. I've spent most of my professional life as a scriptwriter for major film, television and advertising companies. I've also taught scriptwriting to visiting students at Oxford University. In other words, speaking and writing English has been at the centre of my life for many years.
I have a deep love of the English language but I am also very interested in other languages. I have studied German, French, Italian, Russian and Czech. So I really understand the challenges and enjoyment of learning a foreign language. I also know that language learning is so much more than theory and grammar. It's about communication, creativity, culture, nuance and expression. That's why I like to use my deep practical knowledge of English, combined with my formal teaching skills, to teach English that is colloquial, fluent, idiomatic, and convincing in any situation.

I offer online lessons for intermediate, advanced, or business English learners who want to take their English to the next level.
Your English may already be quite good, but you know it could be better. You'd like to communicate more fluently, confidently and persuasively. You want to use your English as effectively as possible in any situation, whether it's for your work, when you travel or just for socialising.
My lessons are constructed to give you that extra level of confidence. First, we'll work to identify where you need to make the most progress. Then we'll base your lessons on carefully focused aims. Forget dry theory and endless formal exercises. I'll teach you English for the real world. Drawing on my extensive experience of using English at the highest professional level, combined with my practical CELTA skills, we'll explore the secrets and subtleties of the English language, so that you'll sound more confident and natural in real-life situations. I'll encourage you to speak and write as much as possible, using practice methods and materials that are really relevant to your life and goals. The aim is simple. To give you the confidence to use your English whenever and however you want.
