About Min
At present, I work in a Chinese Saturday School as a part-time teacher which I enjoy every Saturday, where I am teaching children Chinese in all areas under the school’s syllabus. I plan and organise my own work which included: making a scheme of work, lesson plan, preparation of student work, records kept, organising classroom and school activities, classroom management, assessment, marking, students’ report writing. I try to make the lesson interesting to suit the children. I change the boring articles to children's story drama and direct the children to play. So the children play and learn Chinese at the same time.
Also, at present, I am working as a Chinese teacher in local councils where I have a responsibility in a full teacher role. I set up, update and monitor the Schemes of work; plan and present the lessons in the evening class; Motivate students to continue to study and lead them to reach their goal. Furthermore, I identified students’ strengths and weaknesses and adapted teaching methods as appropriate and strategies for differentiation and equal opportunities.

I have been teaching Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) to English speakers for more than 15 years now, including one-to-one tuitions and classroom lessons. During this period, I have accumulated many experiences in this field. In the meantime, it gives me a clear sign of what disadvantages there are learning the Chinese language outside a country where it is spoken and what the Chinese language teachers can do to minimise these difficulties. I was aware of this every time when I planned the lesson. So I stuck to one or two straightforward objectives for one lesson and kept my materials as simple as possible. I tried to use contrasting pictures and colour word cards in order to balance the “simple” and “accurate” when I presented a new grammar. I used a lot of self-made flashcards to present vocabulary and for classroom activities. Also, I used self-made puzzles including strokes, components, and radicals, and guided the learners to using logic, intuition, and elimination to make up a character after they have gained some Chinese character knowledge. I use humour and tried to keep my students smiling. All these made the lessons interesting, enjoyable and memorable. Students obtained the knowledge of the Chinese language through entertaining and the subconscious way.
