About Charlotte
Aberdonian cellist Charlotte Hay first began studying cello at the age of seven, going on to study with Scott Matheson and with James Halsey at the North-East of Scotland Music School where she was awarded the Joan Dickson Scholarship for Cellists. Charlotte is a 2026 Graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she studied under Betsy Taylor and was the recipient of the RCS’ scholarship for final year strings students.
During her time at the RCS, Charlotte enjoyed working with ensembles such as the Scottish Opera and Scottish Ensemble. Charlotte is a current previous in Overture, an apprenticeship scheme with the Orchestra of the Royal Ballet and Opera (Covent Garden). Charlotte has also participated in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Laura van der Heijden, Pei-Jee Ng, Rebecca Gilliver, Alice Neary, and Philip Higham.
An active performer, Charlotte has performed throughout Scotland. Highlights include performing as principal cello with Camerata Scotland at the Lammermuir Festival and giving a recital on behalf of the Linlithgow Arts Guild with frequent collaborator, Ruarí Woodsend.
Charlotte is currently pursuing her Master of Performance (Advanced Instrumental Studies) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the guidance of Jonathan Aasgaard. She is grateful for the scholarship support offered by the school to allow her to further develop her craft.

Hello! After graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with my Bachelor of Music (Hons) in Cello performance, I have relocated to pursue my Master of Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I am currently living in Cambridgeshire and am very excited to be able to offer 1:1 and small group lessons in my new local area!
I take great care in the planning of each lesson with the aim that every lesson should be focused, flexible, and fun. Focused on the progress and current targets of each student, flexible to every unique learning style and personal goal, and fun for all involved. Learning an instrument is a journey which is both rewarding and challenging and so requires a teacher who is patient, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I enjoy figuring out new ways to teach various concepts to make them as approachable and comprehensive for each student.
Currently, I offer lessons of either 30 minutes (ideal for younger learners), or 1 hour, which are available to all ages and stages. My own cello teachers have had a profound impact on my life and I am aware of how important this relationship is. So I am therefore more than happy to chat about any concerns or queries before arranging our lesson.
