About Danielle
Professional, honest, energetic, patient, caring, and enthusiastic teacher with a good sense of humor with 19 years’ special needs experience with pupils aged 11-19, specialising in autism, pre-verbal, ADHD, epilepsy, and challenging behavior. Often allocated classes with pupils who are deemed the most challenging due to extensive experience in this field. Although I believe professionally and personally that, all behaviour is communication and not deemed as a challenge rather professionals

I create a visual, predictable, safe, and structured environment. All my lessons have a clear start and a clear finish using methods like SCERTS and TEACCH to help structure the school day and in turn, make pupils feel safe and ready to learn. All learners learn at different levels, so differentiation is key when planning my lessons. Making lessons fun, meaningful, purposeful, predictable, and achievable with structure is important when planning my lessons, this is to encourage pupils’ full participation to learn, engage, and in turn, gain a better understanding of the learning intent of the specific subject. Although some pupils may be learning what it feels like to be in a group, learning to take turns, wait, listen, respond, communicate, and or experience the environment, the rules and structure of the lesson, and the school day. Regular reflection throughout my planning to attain individuals learning speed and to make changes so they understand the learning intent.
My pupils all have an EHCP – educational health care plan, incorporating their targets in my lessons is important as this promotes them to achieve their targets while having access to the national curriculum, which has been adapted to their level and created so they can learn and achieve. I believe that it is important pupils lead and have access to an active lifestyle e.g., taking them swimming, trampolining, and lots of long brisk walks, allowing them time to ride a bike and play on outdoor equipment such as swings and the apparatus.
Teaching pupils how to request a BREAK, and incorporating breaks into their daily lessons is key, to help the individual feel regulated and in turn ready to learn.
The duration of a lesson in my current setting is about 20-30 minutes; For some pupils, this may be too long. Pupils complete four lessons throughout the school day. I provide individual tasks for pupils to finish with their own breakdown, this could include a break-walk, drink, or their preferred, desirable item/ object to encourage the individual to complete the lesson/tasks with full participation. The tasks will include their EHCP targets and any key learning e.g. sorting, matching activities, computer skills, communicating through PODD and PECS, writing, reading, maths, numbers, jobs- which include recycling, filling the dishwasher, emptying bins, washing dishes, etc. Tasks are set to the individual’s learning needs. I would set tasks and lessons appropriate to what the families want their children to learn. The duration of the tasks and or lesson is personalized to the individuals needs and outcomes.
I am currently finishing a degree with honours in (special educational needs) at Kingston University. I have NVQ level 3 in teaching and learning. Diploma in Intensive interaction with Dave Hewitt. I have undergone most training such as; epilepsy, ADHD, PECS, Autism, TEAM TEACH, TEACCH, SCERTS, play, behavior, Trampolining, safeguarding, etc. My training and learning never stop.
