About Phil
I have always loved music for the effect it has on people and the numerous life skills that it can improve while studying it. I started playing the trumpet at primary school, going through the grades but not with any particular enjoyment. However, when I started secondary school and joined the jazz band I absolutely loved it, and jazz quickly became my favourite style of music! It also made me more interested in music theory. Before, I had thought of this as being fairly boring but now I find it so interesting to see how everything works when you start looking at the detail.
I have a first class honours degree in jazz music from Leeds College of Music and also grade 8 in music theory. I most enjoy teaching in a one to one situation because it can be 'tailor made' to suit that particular student and help them get the most out of it. I want to help students get excited about the subject of music, whether it is to pass an exam or just for the sake of improving and having fun!
