I have known Shukman Woo for 3 years during which she was giving me English lessons. We started our lessons when I was in the second year of the high school and as I had chosen English as my major subject, I felt a necessity to improve my linguistic skills, to correct my pronunciation and to fill gaps in grammar.
Shukman’s lessons gave me a lot, especially the self-confidence: her lessons helped me to speak out freely, pushed me through my shyness and made me overcome it. Week by week she encouraged me to express my thoughts and opinions on different subjects, first, we studied some documents, audio reports or videos, then worked on vocabulary and then I had to write or to tell what I think about and to answer to different questions to test my comprehension.
Shukman is a very supportive and devoted teacher and what matters a lot she makes learning fun. When I said about my problems with pronunciation of the syllable «ough » in some words, she prepared a funny activity with tongue twister for me.
Also, she helped me to understand the things if I didn’t get them in school and didn’t dare to ask.
Since we started our lessons, my grades had increased. She helped me to prepare multiple presentations in English, asking questions about the subject, with patience making me repeat until I was ready, correcting mistakes.
We also spent a lot of time on grammar and periodically Shuk made short tests on all what we have studied. We learned a lot of vocabulary and every time Shuk made me create a sentence with each new word to make me memorise better.
She helped me to prepare my graduation exams and I am sure I got the highest score thanks to her lessons. We had read and analyzed a lot of documents, Shuk taught me how to read the text more quickly (cross-reading?). She gave me a lot of vocabulary that I needed to use to analyze poems and novels, to write essays and literary commentaries.
She is a very attentive teacher, always looking for an individual approach based on the needs of the student.
Nowadays, I am passing in grade two, studying French literature and English at the university. Shuk’s lessons still « save » me, I still use her vocabulary lists and look at the grammar sheets that she gave me.
To conclude, I would highly recommend Shuk as a teacher, she is very positive, kind person who is absolutely involved in her work. Her endless positivity made me enjoy each and every lesson.
