Esther - St. Albans - Music

Methodology

I am very passionate about music and recognise the importance of a teacher demonstrating this to their students. I make sure that I listen to how and what my students want to learn to get the best out of them.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Violin, Viola, Clarinet, Recorder, Singing either just for fun or to prepare for instrumental music exams. I also teach Music Theory and can help in preparation for music exams such as GCSEs and A-Levels.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a BMus (Hons) degree from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Specialist instrumental teaching module taken as part of my degree.

ATCL instrumental performance diploma.

- How much do you charge?

1 hour lesson: £35 or 30 mins: £20

Lessons can be paid for in blocks or per lesson. No need to sign up for the term.

If you are a student or would like lessons on a week day daytime, we can negotiate discounts just mention this when you get in touch.

- Where do you teach?

I teach mainly from my home in St Albans but I can also travel to students houses.

- When are you available?

I am available either day times or evenings, including weekends. I can continue lessons throughout the holidays if the student wishes.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students of all ages and levels; small children, adults, beginners or advanced.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I have prepared students for ABRSM and Trinity exams in violin, viola, clarinet, voice and theory ranging from grades 1-8.

I also tutor those taking school exams, scholarship practical tests and recitals/concerts, orchestral, chamber and solo.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Music lessons should be great fun as well as providing essential skills for the future. I can be flexible about lesson times and days, so please get in touch to discuss.

I hope to be able to work with you and help you to feel engaged with instrumental learning and I look forward to hearing from you.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching so far for 10 years. My students have an excellent pass record in grade exams. I have taken pupils through their exams from grade 1-diploma level.

I teach and have knowledge of a wide range of reportoire in genres such as folk, classical, pop, blues, jazz and more. So if you just want to play for fun I can make sure to keep you busy with lots of music to get your teeth into.

Along with my partner I set up St Albans String Tuition in 2015 and we teach a wide variety of instruments, mainly from our home in St Albans.

I also have many years experience in performing. I first picked up a violin aged 3 and have been trying to get people to listen to me play ever since. My most recent projects have been playing as part of an Irish folk band, performing at functions as a string duo, doing a run at the Edinburgh Festival as part of a band with a poet and as part of a string orchestra for a Bristol Old Vic production of Coram Boy.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I do have an up-to-date DBS certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I am a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, learning with Richard Crabtree, Jon Thorne and Mark Braithwaite. I learnt violin under the instruction of Ramil Rashidov.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of ISM musicians union.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My youngest pupil is 4 years old, then I have pupils entering various levels of grade exams and adults who are just learning for fun. One of my pupils has just got into a school on a music scholarship for which we put a recital programme together.
