About Tony

I have gained a great deal of wonderful and invaluable experience whilst working as a Learning Enhancement Specialist/Teacher at The Harbour School, Hong Kong. The Harbour School is a progressive international school dedicated to customising instruction in an atmosphere that values individualism, creativity, kindness, and respect so that all learners graduate as innovative thinkers with a strong foundation of global cultural literacy. During the last three years, my responsibilities have included:

• Specific responsibility for English as a Second Language (EAL)
• Providing Learning Enhancement support to students in upper primary, middle school, and high school in literacy, numeracy, science, study skills, behavioural, and social skills.
• Conducting Learning Enhancement assessments during school year.
• Producing Individual Educational Programmes according to students assessed individual needs.
• Completing Termly Reports to communicate student’s achievement in relation to learning goals.
• Facilitating and providing regular and consistent communication with teachers, specialists, families and caregivers on student progress.
I have over 20 years of teaching, training, programme co-ordination, and management experience in adult education, full-time Post Compulsory and Higher Education. The majority of this experience has been related to Teacher Training and Training the Trainer activities, although my formative, and extremely informative, teaching experiences were with apprentice engineers and adult Basic Skills/Functional Skills (basic level English and Maths) learners. I have enjoyed many years of educational, mentoring, pastoral, and quality assurance roles and have taught on a wide range of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes, including Masters level Programmes. This has provided me with extensive experience of teaching, assessing, monitoring, and supporting the professional development of students, in all subject areas, both on work experience placements and on campus. My experience has provided me with sound and critical understanding of the features of innovative practice-related provision, including a deep knowledge of the fundamental requirements for effective teaching together with an understanding of the significant factors that contribute to a high quality learning experience. Coupled with this, I have gained an understanding of educational contexts other than colleges and schools and an understanding of professional contexts beyond education.

My previous positions required me to have excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills; a strong interest in personal development and commitment to success; and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff, and a range of external stakeholders. I consider that my wide range of transferable skills and expertise would enable me to significantly contribute and make me a valuable asset to any large organisation that requires leadership ability in strategic planning, policy formulation, Quality Assurance, and administration.

I believe that I have excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate in a highly effective way with people who find communication challenging, including non-native English speakers. My communications skills enable me to interpret and present messages, changes, and adaptations, in creative, and solution orientated ways. I value others and consider that I have the analytic listening skills required to enable me to work with and effectively support individuals. I am “emotionally intelligent” and believe that if students and colleagues are able to work in an environment of respect, they can be expected to flourish and become good practitioners and, ultimately, leaders themselves.

If I were asked to describe myself, I would begin by saying that I am forward thinking, positive, understanding, patient, and organised, I am not only enthusiastic and passionate about my learning and teaching, but also about the achievements of students and colleagues. I possess an active and outgoing personality as well as a highly professional manner. These attributes have provided me an ability to adapt in changing situations: I have the ability to ‘think and do’. I have a strong sense of integrity means that I am not shy of asking others for help and guidance. My varied experiences have enabled me to become open minded and insightful. I have a resilient and stable character coupled with a good-natured sense of humour. I have a proven capacity to respond positively in a climate of change and I look to the future with a high degree of optimism and confidence.
