About Richard
I’m Richard, a dedicated and experienced English tutor specialising in ESL and English literature. I have an MA in Eng Lit and 20 years experience running Shakespeare reading groups. I also have 10 years experience teaching English as a second language in South America
I support students with clear, engaging teaching that builds confidence, understanding, and strong exam performance at GCSE and A-level.

My Approach to Tutoring
I’m Richard, a supportive and structured English tutor who believes confidence grows through clear explanations, active discussion, and targeted practice. My lessons combine strong subject knowledge with an encouraging, student-centred approach.
I use a clear, scaffolded methodology: breaking concepts into manageable steps, modelling high-quality responses, and guiding students towards independent success. Lessons regularly include close reading, discussion, exam-style practice, and constructive feedback. For ESL learners, I place strong emphasis on accuracy, fluency, and practical communication alongside grammar and vocabulary development.
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, allowing time for explanation, practice, and reflection, although sessions can be adapted where needed.
I have extensive experience teaching English language and literature, with a particular specialism in Shakespeare at GCSE and A-level, helping students understand texts deeply while meeting exam board requirements.
My lessons are suitable for secondary-school and sixth-form students, as well as ESL learners ranging from teens to adults, from intermediate to advanced level.
