About Matthew

Hello! I'm Matthew and I've been an English teacher for the last eight years across Asia. Let me tell you the story of how and why I became a teacher! I completed my history degree in 2012 and wanted an exciting opportunity to teach. After much deliberation, I decided to expand my horizons and teach overseas, so I completed a TEFL certificate and started to pack my bags!

After completing the TEFL i-to-i course, I began teaching English Language to Upper Primary students in a private school in Hong Kong, during the week and conducted after school programs on Friday and Saturdays at a public primary school. It was a steep learning curve and a lot of work but also incredibly engaging and rewarding. I threw myself into the work and, despite making mistakes, I adapted quickly and soon formed a great bond with the teachers and was praised for my strong rapport with the students at both schools.

I decided to leave my post in Hong Kong after two years and I applied to Schools Link in Hanoi, Vietnam. I loved teaching in the government schools in Hanoi as the students had a passion for learning and an eagerness to improve themselves. I taught all ages, from Primary to Secondary students, and adults in the summer school program. This range allowed me to develop as a teacher as I had to adapt and learn different styles of teaching quickly. The juxtaposition enabled me to quickly customise my teaching methods to the appropriate age group. I worked closely with the management and, as part of my professional development, completed a course on English grammar and how to teach it. I also helped develop the course material and led numerous teacher training sessions.

I made my move to Singapore and began working in 2017. I worked at LCentral, a private tuition centre, teaching children aged 5 to 7 how to read through decoding and vocabulary training as well as trying to improve their fluency in English. The bulk of my time at LCentral, however, was spent providing enrichment to Primary School age students with the end goal to ready them for the Primary School Leaving Examinations. This included teaching advanced narrative writing techniques, comprehension, and grammar exercises. During my time at LCentral, I focused on my classroom management and adapting my teaching methods to the Singaporean system which is far different compared to Vietnam and even Hong Kong.

Since the lockdown last year, I have had ample experience teaching online and socially distanced classes. I have been designing and delivering my own curriculum tailoring each lesson to the students’ individual needs and weaknesses.
To continue developing as a teacher I completed a PGCEi in 2020 which gave me a theoretical grasp of teaching to complement my experience in the classroom. Through the completion of this course, I learnt about myself and my teaching style. The course gave me insights into my strengths as a teacher which revolve around good classroom management, a dynamic teaching style, good rapport with both parents and students, and engaging lesson plans. I pride myself in my ability to communicate complex information to students in a way that is easy for them to understand and comprehend. I encourage collaborative learning in the classroom and value healthy group discussions to encourage all students to feel valued and achieve desired outcomes.

I am a teacher whose lessons revolve around good student rapport, a dynamic teaching style, and engaging lesson plans. I pride myself in my ability to communicate complex information to students in a way that is easy for them to understand and comprehend. I encourage collaborative learning in the classroom and value healthy group discussions to encourage all students to feel valued and achieve desired outcomes.

My lessons typically last an hour to an hour and a half with regular breaks included due to the nature of online tutoring. I have recently completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education International, I have a TEFL certificate, and I completed a history degree in 2012. I have been teaching for 8 years in countries such as Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore giving me a wide range of cultural awareness and experience communicating with second language learners.

I primarily teach primary school age students but have experience teaching secondary and adults, as well as young learners.

I can't wait to teach you so get in touch, I am very responsive and let's get to work!
