About Gordon
I am a recently retired Head of Languages with 35 years of relevant and up-to-date teaching experience in the British education system. Over the years I have taught Spanish in a state secondary school, sixth form college and more recently an independent school (11-18 years), all local. I also contributed for a number of years as Spanish specialist on PGCE courses to both a local university and the Open University. I taught Spanish at KS3, GCSE and A level, with a particular focus on improving grades and preparing for examinations. In my last school where I worked for 25 years I was frequently commended for my whole class positive value-added scores (+0.5 to +0.9 last six years), personalised pupil support to all abilities, positive relationships and high level of subject knowledge. I possess a BA Honours degree (Latin American Studies, University of Newcastle upon Tyne 1987), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Modern Languages, University of Hull 1991, Distinction), Master of Arts degree in Teaching and Learning (Sheffield Hallam University 2009), and I was awarded the distinguished post-nominal letters FCCT (Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching) in recognition of my ‘significant contribution to the teaching profession’ in July 2021. I can help develop confidence in any skill or aspect of grammar for GCSE or A level Spanish. Suggested sessions are support for exam preparation for GCSE (new spec) or A level, aiming for a grade 5 (Foundation) or 9 (Higher) in GCSE, bridging the gap between GCSE and A level, and certain A level cultural topics such as ‘El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba’ (Gabriel García Márquez), ‘El laberinto del fauno’ (Guillermo del Toro) and ‘Las bicicletas son para el verano’ (Fernando Fernán Gómez). I have high expectations, and my tag lines at school, which sum me up, were ‘Every Minute Counts!’ and ‘Aim High!’. I always believed in going the extra mile for each and every one of my students. As I sit on the LGB of my last school I have retained my enhanced DBS.

English
As a British national I am aware of the common misconceptions and difficulties experienced by students of Spanish as a foreign language and I know how to moderate my use of target language so that pupils do not feel overwhelmed. I can explain grammar in clear detail, contrasting with English and with numerous examples which relate specifically to examination requirements. I give advice on examination techniques and strategies following my many years of experience and after taking note of specific examiner feedback after external examinations each summer. I have also been a GCSE Spanish Principal Examiner myself for one of the main UK examination boards, which involved writing and setting mark schemes for one of the four skill papers and consulting on the other three. This gave me a valuable insight into the examination process. I am happy to focus on areas or skills which students find difficult, consolidate/revisit classwork via textbooks, or focus on exam board revision using my own materials or past papers as required. When teaching the A level cultural topics I always ensure that pupils are secure in their understanding of the content and ideas in their own language before converting to Spanish. While I use some of the many commercially available materials for language teaching, I can adapt as necessary and largely produce my own materials for cultural topics at A level. I am a strong believer in close marking and individual written and spoken feedback.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I am pleased to recommend Gordon as a Spanish tutor. I have known him as a teaching colleague for over 20 years. He is friendly, approachable, patient and knowledgeable with excellent communication skills. His strong command of the Spanish language along with his ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt to different learning styles will make him an outstanding tutor. I am confident that his enthusiasm and professionalism will make a positive impact on his students.
I met Gordon in 2009 when he taught my son, and later my daughter. Both my children were inspired by his enthusiastic and supportive teaching and remember him with affection.
In 2014 Gordon and I became colleagues, within school he was highly regarded for his maturity and experience, and willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ for his students.I worked with Gordon for nearly twenty years and know him as a passionate and committed Spanish teacher. Gordon always worked hard with students to gain the best possible outcomes and as such I would highly recommend him to prospective students.
Gordon is an exceptional teacher and mentor. His ability to motivate and encourage the pupils in his care is exemplary. Having such a warm and friendly nature ensures he gets the best from his students. Gordon taught my daughter, Year 9, and her capacity to learn, confidently retain knowledge and vocabulary, and make progress in all areas of the Spanish curriculum, went from strength to strength over the weeks and months. I would highly recommend him to others.
Gordon taught our daughter at school. He did an amazing job helping her get her GCSE’S. I would recommend Gordon as he is a lovely patient teacher with years of experience and definitely brought out the best in our daughter who at first had no confidence in Spanish. He was inspirational and positive.
Gordon taught both our children at secondary school, our daughter from Yr 7 - Yr13 & she achieved top Grades in both her GCSE & at A level.
Phoebe had very little languages exposure at primary school but it became very clear that she was both interested & engaged in language learning in particular Spanish. I have no doubt that her passion for Spanish was influenced hugely by the quality of Gordon’s teaching & his passion for his subject. We would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor for Spanish at any level he has been a hugely positive force in the learning of Spanish for both of our children & he has a very friendly & approachable manner too!
Gordon was a much loved member of staff during his time in school. He taught my daughter GCSE Spanish and brought such warmth, patience and gentle humour into his classroom.
His passion and commitment for his subject is undeniable as are his hopes and ambitions for every student in his care to reach their full potential.Gordon was an outstanding teacher and mentor for my daughter whilst she studied Spanish from Y7 upwards. My daughter's decision to opt for GCSE Spanish was solely based her enjoyment of Gordon's excellent lessons, his dedicated guidance and his words of wisdom to always 'aim high'. I would highly recommend Gordon.
Gordon instilled a passion for Spanish in my son right from the very beginning and worked tirelessly to grow that love and enjoyment in the subject, guiding him to an excellent A-level result. He strikes a perfect balance between offering support and building academic stamina, making sure that the child defaults to thinking for them-self rather than asking for the answer. Gordon inspires trust from his pupils and in return will work tirelessly to ensure their understanding and progress; I would not hesitate in recommending him as an aspirational and immensely supportive tutor.
