Experienced industrial chemist looking to offer help for those looking for a career in science

Methodology

I am looking to help people with GCSEs and A levels. I would be looking to cover the class syllabus supplied by your educational institution in a 1 on1 or small group setting, focusing on areas that are proving to be more difficult.

Experience

I am new to tutoring but am educated in Biochemistry and Forensic science to BSc and have over 7 years experience working for a FTSE 100 company as a process chemist. I also have experience as a development chemist in a smaller company.

SKILLS:
Leadership:
Working at Hardide, I was responsible for managing the various production departments to ensure that the level of quality was raised to a sufficient level to obtain airbus certification. Through excellent communication and delegation, I was able to ensure that all departments had updated their procedures, improved their equipment (so that quality guidelines could be met, such as water quality) and retrained their staff. Although the workforce was relatively small at Hardide, I am also experienced in managing much larger groups. Whilst working at Johnson Matthey, my position was at the same level as the shift leaders. This often meant that during my shift I was co-managing all of production. My main role was delegating to all the line managers and their production staff the tasks that needed to be carried out to identify and solve any production issues. I also ran projects for continuous improvement, implementing LEAN techniques. I have been very successful in leading others to perform at their best.
Quality:
In my role at Catalent, quality is of the highest importance as deviations from customer specification could risk injury to a patient that could be fatal. This means I am used to working in a highly regulated environment where batch control and tracking is of the utmost importance.
Analytical:
I have extensive experience analysing data that I have collected from various experiments throughout my education and employment with Johnson Matthey, Hardide and Catalent. Whilst at university, I covered a large range of analytical techniques and calculations such as regression analysis and chi squared. At Johnson Matthey, I commonly used a range of analytical techniques ranging from recovery and concentration calculations to using standard deviation and relative standard deviation as a measurement of error. The amount of analysis within my role at Johnson Matthey greatly increased and I regularly analysed large amounts of data (for example one of the spreadsheets in my last project had over 160,000 data points).
Problem Solving:
Whilst working at both Hardide and Johnson Matthey, problem solving became an everyday requirement of my roles. I work to a high degree of accuracy whilst under pressure to also meet strict deadlines. Whilst at Johnson Matthey, I carried out several projects to improve production. One of my most successful projects was implementing new equipment to carry small quantities of precious metal salts. This enabled us to eliminate deviations from customer specification for precious metal concentration. Before my measures were put in place, each batch scrapped would have cost Johnson Matthey approximately £120,000.
Team Work:
At Catalent, it is vital to work in a team consisting of colleagues from several departments in order to run trials and implement improvements. These teams are handpicked and managed by myself. By utilizing good communication, meetings and delegating of tasks I have found that my team and I have been very successful at implementing improvements in such a highly regulated industry.

PERSONAL INTERESTS:
Since finishing university, I still like to keep up-to-date with current scientific research. I also enjoy learning about nature, bush craft etc., and enjoy an annual survival camping trip. I like to go swimming and scooting with my children and feel that family life is very important. Having grown up in Swindon myself, we relocated here as a family last year to be closer to my parents and extended family.
