I teach mainly A level in an inner city school. I like to provide as little instruction in lessons as possible as I believe mastery in maths comes from the work the student does rather than what I tell them.
I have a degree in mathematics and have been teaching for over 20 years with great success, particularly at A level, in a variety of schools. Few things give me more pleasure than seeing the big smile on the face of a student who finally "gets it"
April 2004 -
Macmillan Academy – Second in Department
My main responsibility these days is to co-ordinate a sixth form which has grown significantly over the last few years, both in student and staff numbers. Two experienced teachers who did most of the Mathematics and Further Mathematics A-Level teaching recently retired and I am now the senior member of the A-Level team.
I organise training, do observations and generally help out where I can with resources and teaching ideas. (And often explaining Maths!)
I have been second in department for 10 years now having made a conscious decision that moving to Head of Department was not for me, having seen previous heads of department constantly under pressure and not enjoying their teaching as a result.
We often run revision sessions during school holidays which I have helped run in the past and I have also organised full morning sessions to prepare for afternoon A-Level examinations.
One of my responsibilities is to organise open evenings and taster sessions for potential A-Level students. I have received positive feedback for these.
In 2009 I took group of students to London to participate in the final of the UKMT Senior Team Challenge. We came 19th out of 50 and were the second highest placed state school.
