About Anthony

My name is Anthony and I am a part-time Maths tutor alongside my work as an outdoor instructor in North Wales. I have a diploma in Economics from the University of Bristol, and an A and A* in Maths and Economics A-Level respectively. Additionally, I achieved a 9 in GCSE Maths. I have been tutoring for the past 9 years around the Bristol area both in person (where logistically possible) and online. I have worked with a range of people over my time as a tutor, and I am very confident adapting to students of all ages and abilities looking for help with the challenging yet rewarding subject of maths. I am patient and understanding and will do my very best to ensure you will always get the best out of our lessons. I have a clear enhanced DBS check (dated 03/2024) and have been trained in safeguarding procedures through my current profession. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch!

Anyone of any level or age is welcome. Whether you need longer term help alongside your studies or just a one-off lesson to prepare for a test, I will endeavour to help you. I have worked with many GCSE and AS-level students, who achieved their desired grade with my help. As well as this, I have tutored professionals looking to polish their maths skills for a workplace or aptitude test such as nursing, management, and the UCAT exam. The way lessons will be taught and structured is completely up to the student and/or parents of the student. However, if there are no particular topics then I aim to go through the syllabus, working through all the different topics to identify where help is needed. I pay close attention to detail, endeavouring to find any areas in need of improvement. In the past I have based my lessons on working through topics the student struggles with to fill any gaps in their learning.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I loved maths from a really young age as it was the subject I was most comfortable with. This interested only developed more and more over the years, expanding into other maths related topics such as science, business and economics.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I only really offer maths tuition as it's the only subject I feel 100% confident that I can teach all topics up to higher GCSE. I am able to offer A-level maths tutoring but I would need more of a heads up with lessons to make sure that I remember and can teach the chosen topics.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have definitely got on better with my maths teachers than in other subjects over the years. But what inspired me to dive deeper in maths and science was a science monthly magazine aimed at kids/young teens which I read for years and really peaked my interest in great concepts and topics.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

The best quality to have as a tutor is to be flexible and to adapt to each and every student. Knowledge and confidence is definitely key, but the ability to understand a student's level, understand what they want to achieve and find the best ways to teach each specific student is what will make the most difference, especially in children as learning can often be seen as boring and a chore. Catching and maintaining the student's interest will often result in faster learning and comprehension of topics.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was 9/10 years old, I'd often read the science magazines mentioned above at the library during lunchtime in the school I was at in France. Lunchtime was 1 hour 30 mins so I had plenty of time and often read the same ones I'd read before as there weren't many. Because of this, my family ended up subscribing to the monthly magazine and my entirely family loved it too!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The first real difficulties I faced in maths were in year 13 where statistics and mechanics felt tougher and out of reach. I still did well in my A-levels but that was the first big obstacle. Economics at university has been a real challenge and the level of maths needed has been a lot more than I realised. I have finished two years of the course but I am actually switching to a completely different course (Spanish and French) as I simply haven't enjoyed the level of maths and what the course has to offer. I still really enjoy maths up to and including sixth form level, but have not enjoyed undergraduate level and will therefore not take it any further.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have found that over the years, the reason why I love tutoring is because I really care and want to help my students. Seeing the progress and change in confidence in my students has been very rewarding, especially when I have been able to bring them up to their desired level and help them achieve the grade they wanted.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

As mentioned above, I will really care about what it is you want to achieve it, and will give my best to help you to do so. As a university student, I am very flexible with lesson times and dates and will always do my best to cater to your needs and timetable.
