I think that learning a language is a process of plunging into its culture, so I teach using interesting stories and videos, pictures and creative tasks. I often use role plays and different language games. I try to provide a lot of opportunities for the students to express themselves and practise the new language. I play the guitar and sing a lot of Russian songs. If the student is interested, songs are incorporated in the programme.
Learning is a a creative process, and both teacher and student play an equal part in it. It's possible to achieve a good result only if both parties are passionate, dedicated and prepared to work hard. It's important to practise the language you've learnt in all sorts of situations and ways. The teacher is responsible for providing the opportunity to see how the language is used through reading and listening tasks and use it in speaking and writing, but the student is responsible for using the opportunity.

I have been giving Russian lessons for about 7 years. I have tutored a student, who didn't know any Russian and wanted to prepare for taking Russian as her major subject at Cambridge. I taught her the basics of the language, by the end of the 3-months course with me, she was able to communicate on a range of topics, read, type and understand spoken language. She also enjoyed singing Russian songs. I am currently preparing a school-boy for a GCSE exam in Russian, and he is making a lot of progress. I am also tutoring an elderly woman, who is learning Russian as a hobby. From having a very basic knowledge of Russian she has reached a level, where she communicates fluently with native speakers, understands and expresses her opinion on the classical works of Russian literature.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I taught general and business English at the Interpreted Faculty of the Kazakh State University of International Relations and World Languages for 6 years. Then I worked at the language school "English First" for a year. I also taught privately for over 10 years. My students ranged from 8-year old children, 15-19 year old University students to 30-40 year old adults. Their level, needs and requirements also varied from beginners to upper-intermediate and learning English for Business communication. I taught Russian as a native language at primary school when I studied at the Pedagogical College.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I do.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
In April 2010 I had a Business English student who wanted to improve his essay writing skills and learn more about business through and intensive one week course. It was a nice challenge for me. I enjoyed it and learnt a lot from it. He is really enthusiastic, very observant, has a good business accumen and original critical thinking. At the moment I have a very good Russian student. She is an absolute beginner, but she did a good preparatory work - learnt the alphabet, learnt to read, listened to some dialogues and songs and learnt a bit about grammar. This preparation made a big difference: speaking, listening comprehension and grammar come easy to her and we've had meaningful communication from the first lesson.
Perfect! I feel incredibly lucky to have found Irina — she is an extremely dedicated, engaging and generous teacher, always well prepared and puts a lot of time into planning lessons and even audio materials that I can listen to between lessons. Her teaching is always engaging, and because we work solely through Russian (even though my language skills were really very basic when I first arrived) I can feel my passive understanding and ability to hold a conversation coming on in leaps and bounds every session — it really feels like extraordinary progress. I'm really grateful, and have no hesitation at all in recommending her! Большое спасибо, Ирина!
Irina has taught my son for about 3 years. She is very experienced and knowledgeable. Irina keeps his lesson effective, engaging and fun.I can't thank her enough for all the help that she gives us. I would definitely recommend her as a tutor.
Irina is a lovely and warm person that has really helped me to learn and further my knoweledge. I strongly recommend her to other students that would need help In learning English as she has been an amazing help and a wonderful teacher.
Before I met Irina, I did not know the English language, but thanks to the professional qualities of Irina, I have a good result. Irina is very responsible and creative in preparing for lessons. Classes are always methodically competently organized, where there is always an interesting and easy to understand explanation. She finds an individual approach to each student. I certainly recommend her to other students, because she has a lot of experience and rich knowledge. Besides Irina is a wonderful person, I'm looking forward to every lesson.
I think Irina is just a wonderful teacher! Her lessons are not just useful, but interesting. She also sings very well and you can learn new songs together! It is excellent!
