About Laura

I'm Laura, an English student at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. I love English, not just for the chance to read loads of great books but also because of its overlap with almost every other art; history, philosophy, psychology and politics to name just a few. For me, the joy of English comes from delving deep into a text and finding out what it informs us of ourselves and our society. Through hard-work and genuine interest I got great grades at school and took History and Biology, as well as English, for A level and so can also help in these subjects.

I have over 300 hours of online experience and received 100% 5 star reviews. At Oxford I coach the weekly Beginners' Debating squad to which any member of the university is invited to improve their competitive debating skills.

I have also been teaching children to horse ride for a couple of years and so have a lot of experience helping those who want to challenge themselves, or are under-confident in challenging situations. As part of my gap year travelling I taught riding in French which taught me a lot about communication and gave me some great experience. I have also spent time volunteering with disabled riders, and love to help those who struggle slightly to achieve their goals. In more academic spheres, in my last year of school I taught the younger students philosophy and debating in my role as head of those societies.

Every pupil is different, especially in humanities subjects, and so lessons will be planned and delivered individually. At school, I found mindmaps very useful to help me visualise the connections between texts, historical contexts, and critics, but after I have learnt the pupil's strengths and preferences I will work with them to find how they learn best. I think variety is very important to maintain interest and so my lessons will be focused on a mixture of what the pupil struggles with the most and what I feel would benefit them most for exam success. I aim to progress as fast or slow as the pupil demands and seek to be both patient and appropriately challenging.

For English, most important is a genuine interest in and a deep understanding of the set texts, so I will aim to cultivate this, but in the run up to exam season, practice of essay questions and analysis of unseen texts can make the difference between grades and so we will focus a lot on these, practising short responses and mini-essays. I look forward to exploring what the pupil finds interesting about books or poems and helping them convert their thoughts into a written response worthy of a top grade.

For me, tutoring is an opportunity for conversation in which I can impart my love and knowledge but also learn from my student, as I'm sure that every pupil has a lot to offer. I would love to help achieve their goals in a fun and engaging way.
