About Jonathan
I have been teaching Saxophone and Clarinet since 2015, working with students across a wide range of ages and abilities. Many of my pupils have stayed with me for several years, which I take as the best compliment a teacher can get. My students have progressed from complete beginners to confident performers, with many successfully completing ABRSM graded exams. I have particular experience working with adult learners, whether they are starting from scratch or rediscovering skills that had been dormant for years. As a qualified primary school teacher, I am highly experienced in teaching children of all ages and adapting lessons to suit different learning styles. I hold a Master’s degree in Music from King’s College London, where I specialised in Modern and Medieval music, giving me a broad and informed approach to repertoire choice and musical development. Alongside teaching, I have performed extensively as a saxophonist, including with several big bands such as Jazz Outlaws and the King’s Big Band, recording with the latter. I have also worked widely in musical theatre settings, bringing real-world performance experience into my lessons. Above all, I love teaching and supporting students as they grow in confidence, musicianship, and enjoyment of music.

Our lessons will focus on developing good playing technique while making reading music notation fun and approachable with any Saxophone! I have several music-based games and activities for learners of all ages to engage with learning the Saxophone in a fun and exciting way. I also try to use examples of your favourite kinds of music as activities within lessons alongside developing technique through selected method books. I really value the role of listening to music while learning the Saxophone, so alongside practice, I usually give some selected listenings to help you develop a greater awareness of style and musicality. Most importantly, I am entirely flexible in teaching and will work with you to create a personal learning plan to help you achieve your goals! I am available for lessons with any type of Saxophone (i.e. Soprano/Baritone)
