I have 19 years experience teaching Latin at leading preparatory and public schools in the south of England. I have extensive knowledge of the transfer process at 13+, having held the role of prep school Director of Studies which involved liaising with senior schools and helping children prepare for interviews as well as overseeing their preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations in all subjects as well as teaching my own. I have prepared scholarship candidates for Eton; Harrow; Winchester; Marlborough; Wellington; Charterhouse; St. Mary’s, Ascot; Cheltenham Ladies’ College and many other public schools. I also have extensive experience of teaching children with learning support needs and was Head of Learning Support at a prep school for five years.
I use Skype and GoogleDocs to deliver my lessons, so there is no cost involved and no travelling time to and from class. I can teach you wherever you happen to be in the world, as long as you have a decent internet connection! I usually divide my lessons into three twenty minute segments to make up the hour slot: vocabulary review; grammar point under scrutiny; translation / past paper practice.
I specialise in unknotting the difficulties that can so easily occur when Latin is taught in larger classes, and then moving forward through the syllabus at a pace that suits the individual. My pupils, without exception, obtain really good results in their exams and are always very proud of what they have achieved. I make them feel good about the progress they are making by breaking down the curriculum into manageable sections, smoothing out any problem areas and reminding pupils frequently on how far they have come to boost their confidence.
Qualifications: PGCE Teacher Training (Oxford University); QTS; BA (Hons.) English Literature (Durham University) - Latin subsidiary.
Experience: Farleigh School, Hampshire; Sherborne Preparatory School, Dorset; Canford School, Dorset; Alleyn’s School, Dulwich; extensive private tuition. I have been Head of Latin in 2 preparatory schools in the south of England.
My aim as a tutor is to prepare my pupils so well that they approach examinations fearlessly and embrace them as an opportunity to demonstrate what they know. I aim to give my tutees a love of learning and Latin - and even rigorous assessment - that will last for the rest of their lives.
As well as my school-based teaching, I have taken 11 private pupils though Latin Common Entrance (Levels 1, 2 and 3) and Scholarship, all of whom have achieved really good results (most grade A) and a place at their school of choice. Many of them came to me totally bewildered by the subject; all of them would tell you how much they had enjoyed the lessons by then end of the course.
"Sophie has helped both my sons with Latin in preparation for their CE exams and I can’t recommend her more highly! Both came with very different issues (one is dyslexic and the other lacks confidence in his ability) and neither had been hugely stimulated by their schools. Latin is such a crucial subject in my opinion and I didn’t want them to scrape by (not sure they would have even managed that!), but wanted them to really get to grips with Latin. Sophie has a real knack at finding the tools and strategies to match the child. She is kind, patient, but firm enough and I know made all the difference to both my children.” Suffolk-based client (June 2018)
"My son was struggling with his Latin with 10 months to go before the Common Entrance exam. I had lost faith in Skype tutoring with another Latin tutor but was desperate and decided to have another go with Skype tutoring but with Sophie this time.
Sophie is a no nonsense teacher, she prepares ahead of the lesson, and recites (declines nouns and conjugates verbs) with my son at each lesson. She is so in control, has sound exam technique, knows the syllabus inside out. From being one of the weakest Latin student in his class, he ended up with a distinction in his Common Entrance exam. I am so grateful. My son gained entry into Westminster School.” London-based client (June 2018)
"Sophie helped our son through his Latin Common entrance . She tutored through the whole syllabus and explained everything in a clear and easy to follow manner. He enjoyed the lessons and has now chosen Latin for GCSE. Her help was invaluable, and replaced some rather haphazard teaching at his prep school. I thoroughly recommend her!" London-based client (2016-2017)
"Sophie is a great teacher! Well planned, productive, and fun lessons. My son’s confidence in Latin has grown!!" Oxfordshire-based client (2017-2018)
"We first worked with Sophie when we moved to London as our son was new to the subject at Year 6. She helped get him up to speed and excel in Latin and then told us when she felt he no longer needed her assistance. After further travelling and a break from Latin for a few years, we moved to the US. Taking up the subject again, our son could not keep up with the different expectations and standards required. We reached out to Sophie again. Despite the time difference she managed to fit us in via Skype. Though Sophie was not familiar with the school districts curriculum she obtained the relevant course materials and mastered the requirements our son had to meet. She got our son to these levels and he became very comfortable with the subject once again. We trust Sophie and her judgment implicitly. She is honest, gets to know how your child works, teaches accordingly and goes above and beyond to ensure your child is engaged and learning. We only wish she could assist in other subjects too! We feel incredibly grateful to have worked with her." New York-based client (2017-2018)

Perfect! Sophie is a fantastic ，experienced teacher. She is always kind and very organized. She knows how to guide my girl step by step and shows her many good learning methods. She really did a good support for my girl. My girl was frustrated with her Latin at the very beginning. But now she shows confident in her Latin and in her teaching group at school. I will highly recommend Sophie.
I have loved the lessons I have given to Echo's children and I am very much looking forward to continuing to work with her in the future.
Perfect! Sophie is an excellent tutor. She uses a very good range of digital resources to deliver engaging and highly enjoyable Latin tuition online. She sparked a real enthusiasm for the subject in my son. I would highly recommend her.
Hugely enjoyable lessons with a very capable boy willing to work hard and think carefully.
Sophie worked with my daughter for a year and demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills as well as making lessons fun and teaching in a way that my daughter recommended. Highly recommended!
Sophie was a teacher at my son's prep school , and is an excellent tutor.
She is very patient and treats each child as an individual, with kindness and good humour, and she makes learning a most enjoyable process for the student.
I would recommend Sophie for her skills in teaching, and for her ability to engage and empathise.
Sophie taught my son Latin for 6 months online and had previously taught him and my daughter for 2 years when living close by. She works in a very friendly and patient manner, checking back on understanding regularly. She changes her style if needed to ensure that her tutees are up to date. She is highly professional and I would not hesitate to recommend her services.
Our son was taught Latin by Sophie in Year 7&8, she also helped him individually to improve his Latin in preparation for a scholarship exam. Sophie brought this subject to life for him and he went onto do the GCSE and achieved an A*. He is now 20 and we still rely on him for the Latin answers in the Times crossword! Some teachers who teach your children are special people indeed, Sophie is one of those. Couldn’t recommend her enough, and now she is a mother I think she will bring even more to the table.
Sophie taught both of my boys english and latin. She is an amazing teacher, inspiring confidence and creativity. They both miss her terribly as their teacher. Not only is she a great teacher but she is also a lovely person whom the children like to work with which is crucial!
