About Ian
I am a professional ESL instructor and copywriter, having worked in both capacities for 10+ years now since returning from 4 years as an ESL instructor in Incheon, South Korea and receiving my TESL certification from Victoria International Academy. Prior to that, I completed my undergraduate degree in English at UVIC and then received my Professional Writing and Business Communication from Simon Fraser University here in Vancouver.

My teaching methodology when teaching English online is of course dependent on the subject. For Grammar and English usage classes, I will introduce any grammar / usage points and then as we work through exercises or facilitated discussions using them I will encourage the student to have their text dialogue box visible in the app so that they can view my real-time corrections for error identification / grammar or vocabulary reinforcement. It's something I'm able to do quite easily as my professional writing background allows me to type in excess of 100wpm. Students have told me they find it to be a very valuable tool and that it aids in their understanding immensely.
For writing classes, I tend to start by introducing proven conceptual ideas to forming written pieces of any kind, academic or otherwise. I will prompt the student to write in something of a 'guided' assignment to start building the 'strings' principle between the different parts of the piece, and then in successive meetings I will ask them to submit writing days in advance of our lesson so that I can make notes, and go over them together in a shared document.
My methodology for teaching accent reduction is currently a work in progress, I doing an apprenticeship with a renowned speech and language expert here in Vancouver and expect to be ready to teach accent reduction within the next 2 months
