About Susana
My two passions are science and education. I am research scientist but I also teach and tutor. I pride myself on getting to know my students and their needs, so that I can tailor my approach to guide their learning.
I have a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Washington (UW) and a MA in Education from Alliant International University. I have taught middle school science (life sciences and physical/chemical sciences), tutored extensively, and most recently taught an undergraduate biology course at UW. Although my research expertise as a scientist is in immunology and cellular biology, I can tutor many STEM subjects.
I have tutored all ages in a number of different subjects. I enjoy working with individuals and seeing the progress they make.
I started tutoring peers in middle school and high school, and also served as an undergraduate instructor for a biology lab course in college. Upon graduating from college, I taught middle school science in Oakland, CA. Although I now mostly do immunology research, I make time for teaching and tutoring, as I love working with students.

Upon meeting, I like to first get to know my student and understand the following:
1) What would you like to learn or improve upon?
2) What are your short- and long-term goals? This answer will be different for each individual and age group. For example, are you trying to build a better foundation in a subject? Do you want to get a better grade in a class? Is this subject part of your career aspirations?
3) What are things that you think are currently standing in your way of learning or understanding a subject?
4) In your past experiences, what have other teachers or tutors done that you find helpful (or not)?
I tailor my teaching approach to my student, their needs, and the subject. When I work with students for a longer period of time, this approach often evolves as the student does. I am always open to feedback on what is or is not working for a student and how I can be a better tutor for them.
I tutored elementary and middle school students in math and science, high school students in biology, chemistry, and math, and undergraduate students in general biology, molecular and cellular biology, and immunology.
