About Destiny

Working with me is more than just learning how to dance. I show my students that all movement is beautiful and should be respected and appreciated. Dance is more than looking 'pretty' or 'perfect'. Dance is movement. Dance is culture. Dance is expression. Dancing is being present in a moment and in your body. Once a person realizes this, they begin to develop confidence, build a relationship with their body, and have so much fun all at the same time!

Dancing and movement are two passions of mine that I simply love sharing with people. It's the way I connect with people and give back to the world. We only exist in our bodies once as we are, so why not celebrate our bodies by discovering all they are capable of! I love seeing the faces of my students when they learn how to move in ways they never would have thought they could because it's in those moments that they feel truly beautiful, confident, or more than they were in the most empowering way. That is my version of giving someone the greatest gift. It was the greatest gift my teachers gave me.

I started in high school by taking an elective to teach Dance 1 for credits and volunteers hours. I also did a number of individual and group choreography work throughout high school and college. After completing my college education I decided to continue teaching dance to share all my love and passion for movement with people who wanted to learn how to love the way they move!

I studied multiple dance styles throughout high school including ballet, hip hop, tap, jazz, contemporary and lyrical, character, and disco. In college, I heavily studied modern dance, which included modern dance history and studying African Diaspora and ballet. I have worked with a number of well-known dancers and choreographers, including Nia Love, Edisa Weeks, Valerie Green, and more. In 2016, I was the recipient of a scholarship for the Green Space Summer Modern Intensive, a dance company in Long Island City, NY. I have a collective 8 years experience in modern and jazz dance.

Before the first lesson, I like to speak with the student to learn about their interest in learning how to dance and what their goals and visions are for themselves. During that meeting, I also share my dance background and how I found passion in my craft. After we learn about each other and decide we are a good fit for one another, I present the student with an outline of how we can make their movement goals, dreams, and visions a reality.

I have worked with students in the 14-26 age range who also range in skill and ability from beginner to intermediate.

Find someone who gives you energy and inspires you to find your inner spark of confidence and beauty. Find someone who can challenge you to challenge yourself. That person will show you how to give yourself permission to be the person you always wanted to be and put you on a new path to finding yourself!

I performed a work-study piece with Rachel Cohen and a large group of talented dancers from all over NYC in a performance at Socrates Sculpture Park. In this study, we wore all-white, started out in flower pots representing flowers that became the planters. It was a beautiful piece I had so much fun with!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should put thought into what they want to learn and why they want to learn it in a practical way. More people want to learn how to socially dance for a number of reasons, versus becoming what they think of as a 'beautiful dancer'. To sum it up! What do you want to learn, why do you want to learn, and how much energy are you willing to dedicate to learning. Once a student gives some thought to those 3 things, they and the teacher can discuss what their needs are and how to meet them.
