About Rachel
Mountainside Arts is a new Creative Arts studio in Charlottesville, VA where all are welcome. I offer small group instruction in drawing, painting, oil pastels, crafts and more to children, teens and adults. I am a certified K-12 Art and Sped teacher and have taught in the public schools for 21 years. I love teaching art, from beginner to advanced, and also offer instruction to individuals with disabilities.

Teaching art is one of my greatest joys in life. Watching people think creatively, learn new artistic skills and overcome challenges makes me so proud. So many children and teens think they cannot draw or paint or they had a tough art teacher who told them they had no talent. This just is not true. Anybody can make art and have a great time learning to creatively express themselves!

Building a positive and trusting relationship is key when teaching art. Students need to feel supported and safe to truly reach their potential. I always begin with easy questions to find out what students previous experience is with art, what they are interested in, favorite artists, and what they want to learn. From there, I develop lessons that teach the fundamentals of each medium with lots of personal choices for students to make along the way. I also do a lot of hands on drawing and painting demonstrations.
