When working with a new student, I first like to get a sense of their abilities by having them write about their favorite topics. It is so much easier to write about something you are passionate about! From there, we move to looking at proper usage of grammar as well as punctuation. The end goal is to have my students be able to correct their own work when writing drafts because they will be able to recognize common mistakes in writing.
