About James

I am a composer and lyricist who focuses on art song and musical theater.

Beginning at the age of 6, I studied piano, brass instruments, composition, guitar, and voice. In addition to participation in a number of state and regional honors bands in Pennsylvania, I was a medalist at the Carnegie Music Festival, a balladeer and researcher/arranger/performer in the music program of Colonial Williamsburg, and a tenor in Pasadena Pro Musica.

I can teach musical theory and literacy at all levels, introduce and refine technical production of the classical or theatrical voice, and develop or enhance the repertoire of singers preparing to audition or perform.

My own focus is the tradition of the 20th century neo-classicists ranging from the revival of folk and courtly melodies by Peter Warlock and his peers to the original work of Copland, Barber, Poulenc, and Vaughn Williams. I am also well versed in the crossover between classical and theatrical compositions of Gershwin and Bernstein, and the American Songbook as represented by Kern, Rodgers, Berlin, and Loesser.

I began teaching the mechanics of vocal production and musical theory as a children's choir director in order to improve the overall proficiency of the group., Subsequently, I was often asked to work with individual singers in order to improve their sound and enhance their repertoire.

Education:

Musical theory and piano under Mrs. Jean Lewis, Pittsburgh, PA (1955-61).

Brass instruments and composition under Mr. James W. James, Pittsburgh Symphony 1958-66).

Performance:

Balladeer in Colonial Williamsburg: 1975-79).

First tenor, Pasadena Pro Musica (1980's).

Numerous individual vocal performances of folk and classical music.

We will work in phases. In the introductory phase, in addition to sharing background about myself, I will ask a prospective student to write two brief essays: One would be a very simple biography. The other is to describe his or her objectives in undertaking tutoring. I will use these essays to evaluate the student's focus and goals and to develop a broad lesson plan aimed at achieving them. The lesson plan, which will be broken into units with distinct objectives, must be reviewed with the student and agreed upon before proceeding.

Our next step is to assure that the student has all of the necessary tools to succeed (such as a standard musical dictionary for beginners) as well as access to an appropriate rehearsal space.

Following these preliminaries, the tutoring process is variable depending upon the prior training and current needs of the student.

I have worked with all levels of musicians from beginners taking their first lessons through young professionals.
